Course Description

In this course, you will gain knowledge of the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to meet the assessed health care needs of people with acute health conditions.

Develop and prioritise the plan of care. 3.4. Implement and evaluate nursing care for delegated elements of acute health conditions based on comprehensive nursing assessment.

4.1. Contribute to the plan of care that considers the status of acute care presentations. 4.2. Implement nursing management for planned interventional treatments and procedures. 4.3. Identify and implement post treatment and procedural nursing care and associated documentation. 4.4. Implement post treatment and procedure observations and documentation and report unexpected outcomes and observations. 4.5. Recognise acute deterioration, prioritise and escalate care, implement the escalation process and report to the registered nurse. 4.6. Identify and implement pain management interventions to minimise immobility risks and promote optimal health status and recovery.

5.1. Identify and implement enrolled nurse's role and responsibilities in an emergency response. 5.2. Use emergency equipment in an emergency situation. 5.3. This unit is designed to be delivered in a Blended Learning mode. Blended learning involves learning through various modes, for example, online learning and learning in a classroom and clinical labs. 

The Blended Learning approach for this unit includes: 

  • Online learning - prepares you for flipped class, provides you with formative feedback and facilitates your learning as you progress through your course. 
  • Classroom teaching - introduces you to key concepts within the course using flipped learning

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral/written presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS.

During the Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121), you will complete 400 hours of compulsory unpaid clinical placements, across four phases (semesters).  Aged Care 120 hours, Mental Health and Primary Health 80 hours each and Acute Care 120 hours.

You must meet all the unit/course requirements before you are eligible for clinical placement, this includes immunisations, NDIS check, Working with Childrens and Police check. If you do not meet these requirements, you may incur a penalty in the form of a fine.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Details

A range of assessment methods will be used to provide students the opportunity to demonstrate competence to achieve the unit requirements. 

 

This can range from:

  • Knowledge Questioning – either written or verbal, this method is used to assess your knowledge
  • Product based – can range from written reports, work samples, presentations, product displays, projects, case studies, portfolios
  • Practical Observation – can be in real time in the workplace, through practical simulated off the job for example role plays

 

Student are required to demonstrate and achieve all aspects and requirements of the assessment task. Students will be assessed as Satisfactory (S) or Not satisfactory (NS). A student must achieve a satisfactory outcome for all assessment tasks prior to a final unit result outcome of Competency Achieved (CA) being recorded.

Assessment Conditions

 

1. Assessment submissions, except tests and other in-class assessments, are due before midnight of the due date and can only be submitted through Canvas. 

2. All written assessments must be submitted through Canvas. 

3. Students are assessed as either S (Satisfactory) or NS (Not Satisfactory) for each task. Each task explains how students are assessed. 

4. Every task must be completed satisfactorily to be assessed as competent in the unit. 

5. Submissions graded not satisfactory must be resubmitted seven (7) days post feedback been givenIT IS THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK CANVAS FOR ASSESSMENT RESULTS AND FEEDBACK AND RESPOND ACCORDINGLY. 

6. There are two (2) attempts only for each short answer theory-based assessment task, two (2) attempts at online quizzes and up to two (2) attempts for practical-based assessment tasks.

Full laboratory uniform is required for laboratory sessions. Students not appropriately attired will be asked to leave. 

100% attendance at clinical laboratory classes is mandatory 

80% attendance to classes is mandatory, Up to 80% attendance will be accepted with evidence in the form of a medical certificate or statutory declaration. It will be the student's responsibility to catch up and/ or seek assistance from their educator.
