Learners must have sufficient capability in English to undertake this unit, which is evaluated as part of the program's admission criteria. 

Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to conduct complex, creative, routine and non-routine spoken or signed communication in English, to meet the oral or signed language and communication needs of interpreting in complex settings. It involves highly developed listening and speaking skills or signing and reading skills for users of signed languages, at a high level of complexity to participate in workplace, social and cultural activities.

This unit applies to those working as interpreters in a range of fields or contexts.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1 - Presentations in English on complex ethical topics

This practical assessment task will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge and skills on: current and relevant standards of professional and ethical behaviour by translators or interpreters in complex settings and interactions, complex, creative, routine and non-routine spoken communication in English, to meet the oral language and communication needs of interpreting in complex settings.

Assessment Task 2 - Presentations in LOTE on complex topics

This practical assessment task will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge and skills on complex, creative, routine, and non-routine spoken communication in LOTE, in order to meet the oral language and communication needs of interpreting in complex settings.

Assessment Task 3 - Ethics, English and LOTE Proficiency Questions

This practical assessment task will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge of current and relevant standards of professional and knowledge of English and LOTE vocabulary in context, procedures, and conventions.

Each assessment clearly outlines the competencies being addressed in the task in relation to performance criteria. The sum of assessment tasks will cover all units and their elements over a range of occasions. You will be given opportunities to demonstrate competency in a variety of ways throughout the program. You are encouraged to discuss any problems or concerns with your teacher or program coordinator.
