It is assumed you have an appreciation of fundamental accounting concepts and procedures.

Course Description

The aim of this course is to highlight and develop an understanding of cost and management accounting as a technical and social practice.  It provides you with an introduction to key cost accounting techniques and procedures used by accountants to produce cost information used to support operational and management decisions.

You will be assisted in developing skills for conceptualising cost and management accounting issues in a variety of organisational contexts.  You will be encouraged to develop practical skills in the area of absorption, marginal and activity based costing and their uses in operational and managerial decision making. 

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

CLO 1: Critique case studies to identify instances that justify cost accounting as both a technical and social practice.

CLO 2: Apply a selection of fundamental cost accounting techniques and methods to determine and produce relevant cost information for making managerial decision.

CLO 3: Collaborate in groups to recommend cost and management accounting solutions for different organisational contexts

CLO 4: Analyse business situations and apply cost analysis to inform complex organisational decision making processes.

CLO 5: Evaluate alternative courses of action drawing on relevant cost analyses and information for operational and managerial decisions.

In this course you will be encouraged to be an active learner. Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work. These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.
