Course Description

In this course, you will explore and analyse the theory, concepts, tools and techniques of investment and portfolio management. At the conclusion of the course, you will be sufficiently competent to apply the theory and practice of finance theories in a work environment, as well as to gain confidence in the application of a range of techniques, and develop a capacity for independent thought and critical analysis, in the areas of investment analysis and portfolio management which will enable you to study finance at a higher level in the future.   This course includes a Work Integrated Learning experience. You will undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice; and be involved in authentic engagement with partner organisations that include industry feedback.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

CLO1: Examine the general investment framework and assess the importance of asset allocation as an investment strategy

CLO2: Illustrate the concept and application of modern portfolio theory, capital market theory and examine their relation to multifactor asset pricing models

CLO3: Review the difference between fundamental and technical analysis while making an investment decision

CLO4: Evaluate the performance of a listed company by investigating the impact of various economic indicators and applying security valuation techniques

CLO5: Create and analyse active and passive portfolios by examining the role of risk and return in the investment decision process

CLO6: Compare and contrast different performance evaluation techniques to assess the performance of a portfolio manager


Overview of Learning Activities

To achieve the objectives listed above, this course has planned various learning experiences for you to participate in various learning activities. These activities may comprise the following:   • active participation and note-taking during lectures/pre-recorded lectures and attendance in interactive sessions. • rigorous self-study and preparation • reading of and note-taking from recommended textbooks, as well as other references • actively participate in the in-class discussion of questions that addresses company, industry and global outlook. Conducting research on listed companies.  • optional consultation with academic staff during scheduled hours  • complete assessment tasks and tutorial and discussion questions for each topic   You are expected to have read the set of recommended readings and any contemporary academic literature relating to each topic. You are also expected to conduct your own readings before attending the lectures and tutorials. The materials presented in the lectures and tutorials may differ from the materials students download from Canvas in terms of information format, breadth and depth. The materials used in the lectures and tutorials are specifically designed to explain and demonstrate key concepts and may not include all the details.
