Course Description
In 2021 this course was titled 'The Playable Image 1'
From 2022 this course will be titled 'Creative Practice 1'
In this course, you will develop your technical and creative foundations in digital game design and/or art practice. You will develop knowledge and skills in contemporary 2D game design principles, their historical precedents, and the specific qualities of these for application to game development. This will give you a technical and creative basis for future study and creative endeavour.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program Learning Outcomes
In this course, you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Develop a technical and conceptual portfolio relevant to game art and design and other forms of interactive entertainment.
- Communicate using diverse formats and strategies to audiences within and external to game art and design.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify and apply appropriate historical game design precedents to contemporary game design practice.
- Produce technical and conceptual preparatory work that can be developed into designs or artworks for game and digital application.
- Adapt art and/or design principles to develop outputs relevant to current and future game design and/or art practices.
- Apply technical knowledge and skills to the mapping, planning and development of core creative components for use in games.

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as studios, project work, lectures, tutorials, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities. Assessment may include projects, assignments, critiques, reports and presentations, which are conducted individually and/or in groups.
