Course Description

In this course you will be introduced to fundamental knowledge and theory of Translating and Interpreting and contemporary theoretical frameworks and approaches.

You will explore how theory and practical strategies can integrate with practice and help address common challenges in translating and interpreting. You will also develop skills to analyse and evaluate aspects interpreting and translating in a theoretical framework. You will begin to adopt appropriate metalanguage to reflect on our practice.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes
If you are enrolled in BP317 B of Languages, in this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:  

PLO 2 - Critically reflect on the role of culture in communication and society and apply this knowledge in a range of cross cultural interactions locally and globally. PLO 6 - Identify, evaluate and critically analyse cultural, historical and theoretical practices which contextualise your professional practice and further study of language. PLO 8 - Critically analyse resources, evidence and personal experience to make ethical, socially and politically aware decisions related to language and intercultural interpretations and applications. PLO 9 - Effectively manage your own learning, developing skills in lifelong learning of languages and cross-cultural communication.

 


Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to

  1. Investigate and critically analyse a range of approaches to translating and interpreting based on professional practice and discipline knowledge locally and globally.
  2. Apply these approaches to evaluation your own translating and interpreting practice.
  3. Reflect on and apply your knowledge of language, culture, and transfer skills, to facilitate cross-lingual and cross-cultural communication.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face-to-face and online, such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, conference papers, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment Task 1: Online quiz (CLO 1) 10% 

Assessment Task 2: Online short answer question (CLO1, CLO2) 25% 

Assessment Task 3: Directing class workshop. (CLO1, CLO2, CLO3) 25% 

Assessment Task 4: Online response to focus question (CLO1, CLO2, CLO3) 40%
