Course Description

This course will provide you with an introduction to the major precursors of contemporary film culture such as the Daguerreotype, Muybridge’s Zoopraxiscope, silent films and Vertov’s Kino-eye. You will learn to recognise and describe the aesthetic and narrative features of film and video genres that may include film noir, thriller, cyberpunk, horror, drama and comedy and how the development of genre relates to technological, historical and industrial conditions. Through close examination of scenes and shots from a diverse range of film extracts you will learn to identity and analyse key stylistic features of major historical movements in film culture. You will conduct an in-depth study of key filmmakers and films from at least one selected film movement and evaluate your personal response to aspects of their film-making ‘aesthetic’ including approach and style.

In the course you will develop the following program learning outcomes: 

PLO1: Use industry, social, cultural and historical contextual knowledge to explain and analyse digital film and video practice and culture 

PLO2: Interpret global communication and media theory to define and evaluate digital film- and video-making production processes and outputs  

PLO6: Apply critical and creative thinking skills and use self-reflection to develop ethical and professional capabilities  


Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to: 

CLO1: Identify and describe precursors to contemporary moving image technology and culture. 

CLO2: Critically compare the development of major genres, forms and historical movements in film- and video-making. 

CLO3: Critically evaluate the creative and technical approach of selected film and video forms.  


Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you will engage in a range of activities that support the development of contextual understanding of digital film and video culture and practice. This may involve active investigation of specific focus areas of contextual knowledge, analysis of source information and media, close examination of materials that exemplify particular concepts and principles, communicating ideas and responses in various formats, and deliberative engagement with peers and teachers.


Overview of Learning Resources

You will have access to technical resources such as camera, lighting, sound recording equipment and editing tools, as well as studio-based learning spaces.  You will be provided with diverse learning and teaching resources, including web-based resources, library collections, and online learning content. You will also be provided with a range of educational support services, including peer-led academic mentoring, tutorials, and internship and mobility support services.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course Learning Outcomes and on your development against the Program Learning Outcomes. 

Assessment Tasks 

Assessment Task 1: Analysis (individual) - 25%. Addresses CLOs 1 &,2.  

Assessment Task 2: Report (individual) - 50%. Addresses CLOs 2 & ,3.  

Assessment Task 3: Presentation (group) - 25%. Addresses CLO 3.
