Course Description

The course aims to provide you with an understanding of the regulation of financial reporting by Australian entities, an understanding of the conceptual framework for financial reporting, and grounding in the requirements of key accounting standards which affect financial reporting by virtually all Australian business entities.
In this course you will explore International Financial Reporting Standards, Integrated Reporting Framework issued by the International Integrated Reporting Council, research papers and accounting literature.

On the successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Interpret and apply selected International Financial Reporting Standards issued by the International Accounting Standards Board to prepare financial statements.
  2. Contribute to the preparation of general purpose financial statements including the exercise of professional judgement.
  3. Critically examine, interpret and assess the impact of current changes in financial reporting requirements in Australian and international contexts.
  4. Compare and contrast the Australian accounting regulatory environment with accounting environments of other countries.
  5. Demonstrate technical competence by applying the underlying concepts, objectives and reporting requirements relevant to a corporate accountant.
  6. Effectively communicate business information in the financial reporting context, both in verbal and written form.


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning and teaching will be based around the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Framework. Your learning will occur through a variety of experiences which may include lectures, classroom activities, demonstrations and /or laboratory workshops. You may be required to critique research articles and Standard setting process, which will expose you to current issues and the development of the accounting profession.
