Course Description

This core subject is designed to give you the experience of working on a group project which specifically involves team-based activity.

You will work in groups of 6-8 to create different components of the project.  Each group is expected to demonstrate an innovative use of Multimedia with continued reference to good design principles.  Individuals within the group will also apply their specialist knowledge,

By group negotiation, an individual student may contribute to a portion of the team’s project entirely under their creative control, or elect to use their specialist skills in a role reflected throughout the project.

At the outset, each group is to write an outline brief (which follows the general guidelines and/or themes presented by the lecturer) for itself defining the aims and objectives of the project, assigning responsibilities for each member of the team, and breaking down the tasks needed to complete the project and achieve the collective goals.  This ’contract’ is to be distributed to all members of the team and to the supervising lecturer.

Teams are expected to have regular production meetings to review progress on the project and to address problems and assign responsibility.

Student centred learning and research will be a key factor in the successful completion of these collaborative projects.  

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon completing this subject, students should be able to:

a) participate effectively as part of a production team

b) workshop ideas within a group context

c) respond creatively to a brief

d) define and provide a unique contribution to a group project

e) assess and honestly articulate problems in their area of
responsibility which may affect group goals

f) be responsible to others and to group aims and objectives

g) develop production experience in an online collaborative project

h) display a professional attitude in managing their own tasks

i) work collaboratively to a deadline

Participants will acquire the potential to evaluate an opportunity, propose a creative project, and actually complete that project in accordance with the guidelines set out by the lecturer. The knowledge accumulated in this course is the basis for collaborative planning, proposal writing and creative project completion. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the processes required for such endeavours. 

Overview of Learning Activities

The prime objectives of this subject will be largely be achieved through experiential learning involving reflective practice on the processes of an evolving team-based project. This is in keeping with the aims of the course. There will be individual student/lecturer consultations and group consultations.

Group based production methodologies, asset management, time management, publishing (both electronic and paper based documents) and presentation skills will be amongst the learning activities.

Overview of Assessment

The two components within this course carries their own individual assessment criteria, yet are progressive in that the final project relies heavily upon the proposal assignment. The final proposal and production must clearly demonstrate a high level of creativity and originality as well as diligence toward and pride in the overall quality of the student’s own work.

This course is designed with a student-centred and group-work philosophy in mind.  You will be expected to build upon your own research and development skills and benefit from continual peer and lecturer feedback.
