Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

MIET2115 Mechanics and Materials 2 or equivalent

Course Description

This course is designed to expand your knowledge in the field of non-linear mechanics of solids and its application to structural analysis, machine design and material processing. Through this course you will be able to understand the influence of non-linearities on the behaviour of structures. The course aims to equip you with essential analytical skills which have a particular bearing on your professional practice as mechanical engineers. On completion of this course you should have sufficient knowledge of the mechanics of solids to enable you to solve advanced practical problems.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes:
● Comprehensive, theory based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the engineering discipline.
● In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline.
● Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving.

Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:
1. Explain the influence of non-linearity on the behaviour of engineering materials, structures and designs
2. Solve advanced practical engineering problems in the field of non-linear stress analysis.
3. Apply knowledge of non-linear mechanics of solids to structural analysis, machine design and material processing.

Overview of Learning Activities

Learning experiences in this course will include:
1. Readings in preparation for classes;
2. Formal lectures;
3. Problem-solving tutorials;
4. Laboratory experiments and demonstrations;
5. Home Study including revision of theory and problem solving
6. Report writing, so enhancing employability skills (eg. communication skills)
Blackboard is used to provide course documents and assessment tasks. Lectures will be recorded and made available on Blackboard. Also, assessment tasks will be submitted and feedback will be provided on Blackboard.

Overview of Learning Resources

The following learning resources are made available:
• Learning package
• Recommended references
• Examples of solved problems
• Additional summarised notes
• Examples of previous exams, some with solutions
• Recorded lectures
