Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

None but some knowledge of Mechanics of Materials and Materials is desired.


Course Description

In this course, you will build on your knowledge of materials and advanced materials. You will learn about materials and processes and how added features such as sensing and actuation can be integrated into materials.You will emerge from this course with a working knowledge of the state-of-the-art in integrative materials, novel manufacturing techniques and signal processing  developments, Design-For-Manufacturing, and environmental issues with regard to material selection and degradation.

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Recognise the opportunities for improving the performance of an engineering structure by added functionalities such as sensing and actuation.
  2. Make informed decisions in recommending alternate systems to existing ones.
  3. Design multi-functional material-based systems
  4. Approach material-based problems in manufacturing with a focus on development trends.
  5. Analyse creatively and critically issues in materials-based  manufacturing
  6. Communicate your findings in written and oral forms effectively


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities will include:

  1. Solving of 3-4 problem sheets related to the course content.
  2. Active class discussions on the governing equations and how these relate to real-life applications
  3. Research-based group work on technologies related to Intelligent materials.
  4. Laboratory exploration of novel additive manufacturing technologies and how these
