Students must have completed a 3 year undergraduate degree in Disability or a related field of study


Course Description

This is an Honours and Postgraduate level course.

This course will assist students in the development of skills that are required to manage a workplace that promotes the learning and development of staff. Key concepts detailed will include leadership and management, quality assurance and improvement, the defining of staff performance standards, monitoring current performance against identified standards, and the promotion of staff learning and development.

The course will also address the issues raised in relation to the management of occupational health and safety, stress and workload management, team planning, and workgroups effectiveness. As supervision is recognized to be a critical component of work performance and positive change, the skills, issues, and guidelines for supervision will be covered in detail.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Students will develop capabilities in evidence-based practice, leaderhsip, communication and building capacity.


• Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices of equal opportunity, occupational health and safety and anti discrimination within a social and cultural context.
• Demonstrate an understanding that the performance of organizations is affected by individual performance.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the contemporary issues, research and trends in relation to service leadership.
• Define and operationalise the work performance of staff.
• Monitor, review, and revise work practices of themselves and others based on defined work performance.
• Identify strategies for effective staff training and development.
• Demonstrate skills in conflict resolution.
• Demonstrate and utilize effective communication strategies and management techniques according to a variety of situations.
• Implement the skills associated with team building.

Student learning will be promoted through the use of online learning activities and readings.


Overview of Learning Resources

The students will be able to access course information and learning materials through the learning hub (also known as Online @ RMIT) and will be provided with reading lists or other sources of information. Students will also use the library resources and University computer facilities.

Assessment tasks will include a work based management program and weekly exercises.
