NURS 1046 Management Principles and Practice is a pre-requisite for this course


Course Description


This course will complement the theoretical components undertaken in the specialty courses in the Management for Health Professionals stream. Emphasis will be placed on analysing and synthesizing this knowledge through application and reflective practice.

This course encompasses contemporary management theory and knowledge in the context of the health care environment. Students will have the opportunity to develop conceptual frameworks upon which they can base their management skills and practice, relevant to the student’s area of study, in hospital and/or community settings.

This course also explores entrepreneurial and innovative concepts in relation to the health care sector. Students will have an opportunity to critically analyse issues and strategies relating to the management of entrepreneurial activities.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The dimensions of capability developed in the course include:
1. Ability to apply advanced skills in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in a variety of clinical settings and contexts;
5. Apply an evidence-based approach to advanced practice;
6. Operate as a team member to lead, manage and contribute to an enabling environment that promotes safety, health and human dignity;
8. Engaging in reflective practice and professional development of self and others.


At the end of the course you should be able to:
• Apply selected management theories, processes, skills and strategies to the planning, implementation and evaluation of a project or system in the health care environment;
• Use reflective practice techniques to analyse and synthesise management knowledge relevant to individual areas.
• Identify and critically analyse the entrepreneurial and innovative contexts in the selected area of study;
• Evaluate the degree of achievement of their objectives in relation to the project

The underpinning knowledge and skill developed in the course includes:
• Identify a project relevant to the selected area of study
• Develop the selected project within identified management theories using an Evidence Based Practice approach.
• Adopt an entrepreneurial and innovative approach to the development of the project plan.
• Recognise the role of Reflective Practice techniques in analysing and evaluating the project.


Overview of Learning Activities


The course contains recommended readings, opportunity for reflection on personal management practices and leadership styles, participation in personal and peer review, as well as analysis and critique of individual management and leadership experiences. Students are required to participate in lectures, directed learning sessions, classroom discussions, classroom presentations, peer review.


Overview of Learning Resources


The use of experiential learning and reflection on practice comprise a significant part of this course. The course is supported by the Distributed Learning System (DLS) where learning materials and content are available to students online. Guided learning activities are provided via the DLS. There is an online chat room and discussion board for student access. Journal articles and the electronic media also provide learning resources for students undertaking this course.
