Course Description

The aim of this course is to provide you with practical skills in the application of research skills to an environmental and planning issue. You will work individually on a research topic to be chosen in consultation with appropriate staff of the School. Each student will be supervised by a staff member of the School. The course will be structured to assist you in selecting and developing appropriate research topics, research methodologies and in the gathering of information and resources.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On completion of this course students will be able to: integrate skills and knowledge gained in the Master of Social Science (Environment and Planning) program; define and develop an effective methodology, research/investigate an agreed on problem and draw appropriate conclusions, and produce a high quality research report of publishable standard.

Overview of Learning Activities

Three key learning experiences are planned. Firstly, students will gain experience in undertaking a significant piece of research. Secondly, they will have practice in integrating both theory and practical experience in an approach to a research topic agreed on with their supervisor. Thirdly, students will have the opportunity to integrate the experiences and knowledge acquired in previous subjects to undertake research tasks and produce a report which can be implemented.
