This is an online web-based course. The course is designed to provide a fundamental knowledge and understanding of the chemistry of toxic chemicals, their detection and determination.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Students are expected to gain a sound knowledge and understanding of: principles of chemical structure and reactivity; toxicities of a range of inorganic and organic chemicals and their relationships to chemico-structural features; natural products, their occurrence, properties and action; animal toxins, venoms and their sources; analytical techniques in toxicology.
Overview of Learning Activities
The combination of workbooks and online modular delivery of this course enables independent learning. Review questions and short written essays are related to the module topics addressed in each of the sections on physico-inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical techniques in toxicology.
Overview of Learning Resources
This course is accessed online via the RMIT Learning Hub ("Online @ RMIT"). The content for this course is provided through printed workbooks, online modules, and the prescribed textbooks. Further learning resources such as articles and links to relevant web sites are provided where appropriate.
