Course Description

Cartography is a complex, ever-changing field but at the centre of it is the map-making process This course introduces you to the basic principles involved in cartography. It includes a study of map resources and use of contemporary mapping products. You will examine methods of transforming the physical environment into a map product as well as the key elements of map design.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes in BH116 (Bachelor of Applied Science (Surveying) (Honours):


1.2 Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the spatial models and mathematical methods used in contemporary practice.
1.3 Understand specialist bodies of knowledge in surveying and geospatial science.
2.3 Be proficient in the recording, storage, management and reporting of spatial information.
2.4 Use cartographic design skills for the visualisation and representation of information
4.1 Communicate effectively by means of oral, written and graphical presentations to peers and a wider audience.

 

This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes in BH117 (Bachelor of Science (Geospatial Science) (Honours):


1.4 Understand models of cartographic communication.


On completion of this course you should be able to:

 

  1. Describe the nature of maps and the history of mapping
  2. Use a variety of contemporary map products
  3. Interpret maps - on both quantitative and qualitative levels
  4. Apply cartographic design principles involved in map design and use graphics software for mapping purposes.
  5. Recognise available map resources
  6. Identify the principles involved in the map production process


Overview of Learning Activities

This course is delivered through a series of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. Tutorial exercises complementing and reinforcing theory covered in lectures will engage you further. You will also complete a series of practical exercises in which you will learn to use graphics software for mapping purposes. 

Teacher Guided Hours: 40 per semester
Learner Directed Hours: 50 per semester
