Course Description
This course develops on the thermodynamic and fluid mechanics principles introduced in MIET2341 Thermo-Fluids. This includes the calculations necessary to evaluate operation of reciprocating air-compressors and internal combustion engines, steam, air- conditioning plants and hydraulic machinery such as pumps and turbines.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs):
1.1. Descriptive, formula-based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the practice area.
1.2. Procedural-level understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences which underpin the practice area.
1.3. In depth practical knowledge and skills within specialist sub-disciplines of the practice area.
3.3 Creative, innovative and pro-active demeanour
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Apply the laws of thermodynamics to non-flow and steady flow engineering applications.
2. Describe the operating principles and applications of a range of thermodynamic and hydraulic equipment and to perform relevant performance calculations.
3. Analyse/model hydrodynamic systems and hence predict the flow behaviour.
4. Perform calculations involving viscous fluid flow through pipes and pipe networks.
5. Design and examine the performance of compressors, IC engines, turbines, pumps and heat exchanger.
Overview of Learning Activities
Classes will include lecture material and class exercises. The material will be closely supported by reference textbooks and handouts. Class exercises will then be used to demonstrate the analysis and problems relating to that topic. You are expected to review and prepare for classes, solve problems, research difficulties and do background reading. These hours are expected to prepare you for learning activities through quizzes, lab exercises and exam, which are far more effective when you are active rather than passive.
Overview of Learning Resources
Students will be able to access information and learning materials through myRMIT and may be provided with additional materials in class. List of relevant reference books, resources in the library and accessible Internet sites will be provided where possible. During the course, you will be directed to websites to enhance your knowledge and understanding of difficult concepts.
