Course Description

This is an elective course that focuses on introducing technology tools and strategies for engaging students and enhancing learning. The course is designed to use essential questions to support curriculum planning and implementation that effectively integrates technology across the curriculum.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is designed to assist students to:
• Increase their awareness of a range of ICT applications and how they can be used in the classroom to enhance learning and teaching.
• Reflect on and critically evaluate the role of ICT in learning.
• Review and create strategies to incorporate ICT across curricula.
• Develop skills and confidence in using a range of educational software applications.
 


Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
• Develop more engaging and focused units of work.
• Incorporate ICT effectively into curriculum contexts.
• Critically evaluate educational ICT applications.
• Use selected ICT applications with greater confidence and competence.


ICT Outcomes
At the conclusion of this course students will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following ICT capabilities:
• Understandings of the role of ICT in learning and implications for the classroom.
• Awareness of a range of contemporary ICT resources suitable for the classroom.
• Understandings of how ICT resources can be integrated in meaningful ways that take into account students’ existing and diverse technological skills and to produce engaging and challenging curriculum.
• Understandings of how to use ICT in the classroom to facilitate learning, in particular critical skills such as information skills, analysis, problem-solving and decision-making.
• Abilities to provide opportunities for students to be engaged in ICT-enriched activities that are essentially self-regulating and cooperative.
• Awareness of how the classroom environment can be managed to empower students’ use of ICT.
• Personal proficiency in using ICT.

Students’ learning in this course will involve a range of activities in face-to-face workshops including co-operative small-group work and discussions and practical ICT workshops.

Assessment tasks are directly linked to the stated objectives and outcomes. Assessment in the course will be both theoretical and practical in nature. A range of formative and summative assessment types will be incorporated into the course (for example, curriculum design, oral, written and performance based assessment).
