Course Description

Within the aviation industry regulatory authorities such as the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA), and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), provide frameworks that are essential for safe commercial and general aviation. Regulations such as JAR-OPS, JAR-FCL and EASA Part-145 require organisations to implement and maintain a Quality Assurance Programme (QAP) to ensure safe operational practices with airworthy aircraft, and to review such systems through regular reviews. This course will prepare you towards being able to contribute to this process as valued member of a team, through understanding the fundamentals and application of Quality Assurance principles.

Quality is not only relevant to product characteristics. It is equally important in assessing customer satisfaction and systems performance. It is essential that the same rigour that is brought to the assessment of product characteristics is also brought to these less tangible factors.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Needs, context and systems: 

  • Identify, interpret and analyse stakeholder needs, establish priorities and the goals, constraints and uncertainties of the system (social, cultural, legislative, environmental, business etc.), using systems thinking, while recognising ethical implications of professional practice.

  • Demonstrating information skills and research methods.

Coordination and communication: 

  • Communicate and coordinate proficiently by listening, speaking, reading and writing English for professional practice, working as an effective member or leader of diverse teams.

1. Apply understanding of the principles of quality management to typical aviation industry scenarios
2. Relate with relevant philosophies to quality management methods and techniques
3. Utilise common quality tools in a professional context, and
4. Develop quality improvement strategies


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are:

  • Attendance at lectures where syllabus material will be presented and explained.
  • Completion of class exercises and group based projects; and
  • Private study, working through the course as presented in classes
  • Tests and exam.

Learning resources will consist of recommended references and class notes which may be accessed through "myRMIT". The set of references is deliberately broad, including books, journal publications, government reports, industry standards and handbooks, and web-based resources.
