Course Description

This course covers the spectrum of sports facilities including stadia, winter and water sport facilities, sports surfaces (gym surfaces, tracks, artificial and natural turf), and gyms. The course introduces you to the design of stadia and sport parks, athlete and spectator safety, accident and injury prevention, sustainable operation, legal issues, and athlete and spectator comfort. The main focus of the course is targeted at design and safety issues, supported by case reports and site visits.
This course is intended to represent the problems and solutions that a new graduate might be expected to undertake shortly after starting work as a professional sports technologist. In this course you are required to undertake a group project which requires you to demonstrate technical skills and personal attributes at levels which are commensurate with professional sports technology practice.
This course will provide you ample opportunities to familiarise yourself with various real-world sports technology problems. You will learn to design, analyse and test a wide range of sports facilities.
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
• Apply knowledge of basic sciences and engineering;
• Relate basic principles of design and management of sports facilities to identification of problems and find solutions;
• Develop new ideas and logical explanations.

Problem-solving and Design (PLO2)
The course will equip you with cognitive skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and to reflect critically on theory and professional practice or scholarship. In addition to that, this course will equip you with cognitive, technical and creative skills to generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level.
Analysis (PLO3)
You will acquire knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to the field of sports facilities. The course will equip you with cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories related to sports facilities and to apply established theories. In addition to that, this course will equip you with cognitive, technical and creative skills to generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level.
Professional Practice (PLO4)
The course will equip you with communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions to specialist and non-specialist audiences. In addition to that, this course will equip you with technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse and theorise about developments that contribute to professional practice or scholarship. Also, this course will equip you with creativity and initiative to new situations in professional practice and/or further learning.
 


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities for this course include face-to-face lectures, tutorials, laboratory experiments and analyses, site and plant visits, and a group project. The basic theoretical background will be explained in the lectures and various real-world technology problems will be discussed and analysed in the lectures and tutorials. The basic principles will also be demonstrated and reinforced through the laboratory experiments. The group project exposes you the design of optimised or innovative sports facility within a team in a simulated company environment under close supervision of the course coordinator.

- lecture notes and laboratory handbooks that are available on the Learning Hub, and
- specialist books and journals that are accessible in the RMIT library and other major libraries (recommended references as listed in the Part B Course Guide).
Internet sources may be helpful, but will not be sufficient by themselves.
 


Overview of Assessment

The assessment of this course will take a variety of forms that are appropriate to assess student performance in a range of skills such as planning and management of a project, critical thinking, communication, technical competency, and professionalism.
Assessment includes the following items:
• Formative assignments
• Data analysis & Presentation (based on lab work)
• Presentation and documentation of the group project
