Course Description

In this course you will develop knowledge and skills in supporting children to better manage themselves and relate to others through successful and appropriate behaviours in both mainstream and special education. You will evaluate behaviour, investigate the link of the behaviour to its plausible cause, and make recommendations to redesign environments to encourage positive behaviours. You will specifically work with a child with special needs to increase their repertoire of behaviours that will support individual learning development. You will explore positive, constructive approaches and implementation strategies through role play and other instructional scenarios. Legal and reporting requirements will also be investigated.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

- Discuss appropriate procedures to identify and assess behaviour of concern in children
- Inquire into and evaluate possible causes of behaviour using appropriate strategies
- Work collaboratively to develop strategic approaches for successful behavioural interventions and learning outcomes for each individual
- Critically discuss and review the legal, ethical and moral requirements and implications for individual case.
- Support decisions to address student behaviour with appropriate evidence
- Develop on-going learning and improvement practices for self and others associated individual students.
 


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

- Engage with diverse learners in a range of educational contexts in order to develop skills and knowledge for flexible and adaptable participation in professional communities of practice.
- Communicate using a range of formats and strategies to audiences within and external to the discipline of education.
- Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.
- Demonstrate the specific knowledge and skills required in working successfully with learners with additional needs.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
