None. Some exposure to high school physics would be an advantage.


Course Description

This course provides an introduction to structures and solid mechanics. Starting with Newton’s laws, the concepts of equilibrium and free body diagrams are established. These are extended to examine simple 2D structures. Internal loads of shear force, axial force and bending moments are examined, with introduction to tensile stress-strain curves of engineering materials and the concepts of elasticity and elastic limit. The flexural formula is introduced and the significance of the second moment of area and centroid is outlined. Torsional loading is examined and the differences between frames and machines are highlighted. Statically indeterminant structures are analysed using compatibility concepts.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

  1. Analyse the states of static equilibrium for objects subjected to forces/couple systems, including external free body force/couple diagrams; 
  2. Determine internal forces, stress and strain in simple pin-jointed trusses, beams and frames including normal force, bending moment and shearing force diagrams;    
  3. Evaluate geometrical properties of cross-sections and stiffness and strength properties of engineering materials;    
  4. Analyse torsional stress and angle of twist in circular shafts used for power transformation
  5. Analyse statically indeterminate structures subjected to axial and torsional loading
  6. Apply the flexural formula to simple structures to calculate the bending stress
