Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
From project inception to project delivery and dissemination, the Development Studio will continue to extend your knowledge and skills of contemporary publishing practice. You will model industry practice by working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team on a diverse range of writing and publishing projects. Your experience will cover the editorial, production, marketing, sales and distribution processes. Through practice, you will discover the challenges and opportunities of contemporary writing and publishing.
The Bowen Street Press is a real world, student-led publishing house encompassing digital, online and print delivery. Through studio-based practice and a variety of writing and publishing projects, you will explore the opportunities and challenges within a writing and publishing community of practice. This will include working with students across all studios within the Bowen Street Press.
This is a designated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course for MC262 Master of Writing and Publishing and GD199 Graduate Diploma of Writing and Publishing. This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry is integral to your experience.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Investigate and develop creative marketing and social media solutions and explain how they contribute to contemporary writing and publishing practice.
- Analyse and discuss the editorial and production considerations and evaluate their effects on publishing projects.
- Develop and apply skills in communicating complex content across varied platforms that are innovative and responsive to changing technological contexts.
- Critically analyse and discuss current issues in contemporary writing and publishing professional practice.
- Work in a collaborative manner leading to creative outcomes for real-world needs.
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Employ appropriate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to solve problems associated with the writing and publishing industries.
- Effectively and professionally communicate your ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may include presentations, projects and may be done individually and in teams.
