Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
This course is only available to Honours students who have met the selection criteria for BH058P12, the Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Honours).
In this course you will develop your scientific research methods and skills and undertake your research project.
Under the guidance of your supervisor you will:
- Undertake appropriate laboratory inductions and training as required by RMIT University and government legislation.
- Plan and organise your research project requirements.
- Develop an understanding of the ethics and approvals requirements needed for your research project.
- Learn information and data acquisition skills and techniques you will require to undertake your research project.
- Collect, interpret and analyse primary data relating to your research project.
- Communicate your research data.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BH058 Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours):

- Demonstrate knowledge of research training requirements for your research project.
- Perform research, record scientific data and disseminate research findings according to Australian government regulations.

Overview of Learning Activities
Under supervisor guidance you will develop a greater understanding and skills in research project data processing, statistical analysis and data interpretation.
Gain skills to assist you to organise and integrate your research project data and information into a coherent and logical evaluation.
The research project learning activities will vary depending on the project. They will comprise skills particular to the experiments or procedures of the specific research project and include:
Individual problem solving, guided by your supervisors advice, experience and published literature.
Discussion and reflection with your supervisor, collaborators and peers.
Total study hours: 18 hours per week comprising this course of independent research in a laboratory or clinical setting.

Overview of Assessment
This course has no hurdle requirements.
The assessment for this course is a dissertations / theses which is completed in a series of three research project courses: Research Project 1, Research Project 2 and Research Project 3. The main component of the honours year program is a substantial piece of research that will be assessed with a submission of a thesis and an oral presentation.

Thesis assessment (1st examiner) 45%
Thesis assessment (2nd examiner) 45%
Where the two thesis examiners’ marks differ by more than 15% of the maximum possible mark, the Dean/Head of School or nominee will appoint a third examiner, who may be from within the University or external to it, but who must not have supervised the dissertation or thesis.
