Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Students, who are enrolled to the Translating and Interpreting major, will need to complete 156 credit points of the following 13 core and major courses: LANG1314 - Theoretical bases of translating and interpreting; LANG1302 - Discourse Studies for translators and Interpreters; LANG1305 - Translation and Technology; LANG1303 - Ethics and Professional Issues in T&I; LANG1317 - Language and the Law: Forensic Linguistics; LANG1316 - Translating Practice and Principles; LANG1304 - Interpreting Practice and Principles; SOCU2289 - Global language; LANG1318 - Language and Society; LANG1321 - Introduction to Language; SOCU2252 - Intercultural Communication; SOCU2290 - Working and Managing in International Contexts; SOCU2265 - Language Management in International Organisations.

Students, who are enrolled to the Japanese major, will need to complete 156 credit points of the following 13 core and major courses: SOCU2289 - Global language; LANG1318 - Language and Society; LANG1321 - Introduction to Language; SOCU2252 - Intercultural Communication; SOCU2290 - Working and Managing in International Contexts; SOCU2265 - Language Management in International Organisations; LANG1306 - Japanese 1; LANG1307- Japanese 2;LANG1308 - Japanese 3; LANG1309 - Japanese 4; LANG1310 - Japanese 5; LANG1311 - Japanese 6; LANG1313 - Japanese Language and Society.

 


Course Description

The Language and Culture Internship helps you to develop skills to identify and negotiate your own internship opportunity with mentoring, support and advice from RMIT staff then gain valuable work experience in your specific field. You will be able to apply and further develop your learning of globalization, language and cultural diversity. You will be required to secure and complete a work based internship in a professional situation in an international or cross-cultural context either in Vietnam or another country. Your internship will be of 80 work hours and you will have a chance to debrief and reflect with your peers and an expert panel after your internship.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:


  1. Identify where your skills and capabilities intersect effectively with the needs of industry.
  2. Apply and practice good communication skills in a variety of professional and/or cultural contexts.
  3. Apply your developing professional skills and knowledge in order to engage with a workplace environment in your field.
  4. Reflect and evaluate where your experiences might lead you professionally, for future employment
  5. Establish links between lessons learned from professional practice and the knowledge gained from the core subjects, languages and the chosen electives.


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities will take the form of:

  • Full time work in a professional context.
  • Participation in an online community for RMIT’s internship students.
  • Two multidisciplinary workshops part way through the internship.
  • Debrief interview and reflection.


Overview of Learning Resources

Learning resources will consist of recommended references and class notes which may be accessed through "myRMIT" if you are in Melbourne and via "RMIT online" if you are based in Vietnam.

The set of references is deliberately broad, including books, journal publications, government reports, industry standards and handbooks, and web-based resources.
