Course Description
In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge to machine uppers according to product requirements. You are required to work to quality requirements and identify any processing problems.

On successful completion of this course you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate competency in the above elements.
Details of Learning Activities
Integrated learning consisting of theory and practical components will be carried out in practical workshops for the skills and knowledge required to machine uppers according to product requirements while producing shoes.
Teaching Schedule
Practical workshops to machine uppers according to product requirements will be conducted in conjunction with other practical based learning. Workshops will include demonstration of techniques and students will be required to demonstrate their practical skills to machine uppers according to product requirements for each pair of shoes produced for assessment.
Week 1-4 Learn the basic operations of a Flat Bed Sewing machine. Incorporating the development of a pair of Court Shoe uppers. - 1Pair
Week 5-11 Develop machine skills by learning and operating a Zig Zag and Post Bed sewing machines. Incorporating the development of a pair Derby Shoe uppers. - 1Pair
Week 12-16 Development of Oxford Shoe for assessment - 1Pair

Overview of Assessment
Assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and will consist of both theory and practical based exercises, predominantly in class but some out of class research and information formatting is required as well. Feedback will be provided throughout the semester on all assessment tasks.
All assessment tasks must be completed before competency can be achieved. Tasks that have not be authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is encouraged.

Assessment Tasks
Student will demonstrate and answer relevant questions regarding the knowledge and skills required to set up a machine, to sew an upper according to product requirements, to a competent standard.
Student will submit for assessment Leather sewing exercises, and a pair of Oxford styled Uppers. Uppers are to be produced to a required industry standard. Included in the production of these Uppers, student will demonstrate how to machine an upper according to product requirements using safe & efficient methods.
