Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to articulate, present and debate ideas in a work or broader life context using creative techniques in order to provoke response, reaction and critical discussion.
This unit applies to individuals who contribute and present ideas that may be complex in nature and may relate to new products, services, processes or creative works using a degree of risk taking and storytelling.

This course is structured to provide students with the optimum learning experience in order to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to analyse ideas and alternatives for communication and discuss and debate ideas.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment Methods
Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of the requirements in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks, for example:
- direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
- review of final printed documents
- demonstration of techniques
- observation of presentations
- oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of software applications
You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.
In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide:
Performance Evidence
Evidence of the ability to:
- present ideas and information to a unfamiliar audience and environment that provoke interest and response
- reflect on and appraise the views of others
- participate actively and confidently in critical debate and discussion of ideas while responding to new and different communication situations
- investigate and evaluate creative and different ways of expressing and communicating ideas while making an opportunity pitch.
Knowledge Evidence
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
- explain different ways in which individuals receive and respond to ideas and information, and what influences their response
- identify the enabling skills and attributes of people needed to effectively discuss ideas
- describe the nature and role of risk taking in the presentation and debate of ideas
- explain the role of storytelling in communicating ideas and key storytelling techniques
- describe common techniques to tailor comments to particular audiences.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions. You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed. Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.

Assessment 1
Assessment Task 1 –Portfolio of works (33%)

Date and time due : Week 6 midnight
Group or Individual: Individual assessment
This assessment has been designed to allow students to learn the complexities of writing documents in a business environment.
Requirements:
Students are required to complete FIVE classroom tasks. All activities will be undertaken in class with a final completed portfolio to be compiled and submitted via blackboard. You will then hand in your chosen pieces by the due date and be marked on the total contribution.
From the class activities, students will submit:
- Business letter
- Business email
- Job application letter
- Website
- Brochure
Where necessary a template will be provided for written pieces.
PLEASE NOTE the work must follow the basic principles of clear writing, be free of spelling and grammar errors.
Assessment 2
Assessment Task 2 – Business Proposal (33%)

Date and time due: Week 9 midnight
Group or Individual: Group
Purpose:
Students will now combine their complex writing skills, research, analytical and professional report preparation skills to create a business proposal for a client pitch. The purpose of the business proposal is to take their new product onto Retail Shelves.
Requirements
Student is required to present (using slides and submit professional standard business proposal (report format) that will be convincing and promising to the client in terms of product success in the retail environment/store. Students will be working in teams. Detailed brief will be handed in class including product details, company background and can be found on Blackboard. Each student must contribute equally to the Assignment.
Details of Assessment
Prepare a detailed business proposal about the product details. The proposal should cover key facts such as the target market for your product, reasons why the product will appeal, selling price and discount levels, volume that you can supply, and merchandising or other promotional support that you will offer.
- Report Format (1200 Words (Min), to be electronically submitted via Blackboard as a Word or PDF file)
- The Business proposal must include relevant Pictures (product, company, or stock images non copyright), graphs, figures etc.
- Slides Presentation of the Business Proposal in class

Assessment 3
Assessment TASK 3 - DEBATE (33%)
Date handed out: Week 9
Date and time due: Week 14 in class
Group or Individual: Group
Purpose:
The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate your ability to both prepare an argument in support of a case, and also to listen and respond to counter-arguments. This will give students’ valuable preparation, organization and listening skills, as well as public presentation experience.
Requirements: This assessment requires students to participate in a formal debate as part of a two/three-member team.
Details of Assessment:
Students will be grouped in teams for a formal debate. Topics and ‘sides’ will be decided in class. Each student must then perform his or her role as part of the team. Students will be assessed individually, and are required to upload their notes with a coversheet before the debate.

Late Submission Procedures
You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates. If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.

Resubmissions (VET Programs):
If you are found to be unsuccessful in a Course Assessment Task you will be allowed one resubmission only. Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission. The highest grade you will receive if your resubmission is successful is “CAG”.
If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.
