Course Description
This unit describes the communication and work practice skills and knowledge required to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the health industry context. It deals specifically with cross-cultural awareness and issues involving working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, organisations and communities

Lesson 1:Reflect an awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and cultures in work place
• Identify & discuss the events and issues in ATSI history, & how these may impact upon healthcare service delivery
• Identify & discuss cultural diversity of the ATSI people how this may impact upon healthcare service delivery
Lesson 2. Refloect an awareness of own and other cultural realities in work practices
• Identify & describe appropriate strategies to effectively address cultural differences in the workplace
Lesson 3. Communicate effectively with aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People
• Identify & describe resources to facilitate effective service delivery for ATSI people
• Identify & discuss the differences of the EN’s culture and that of ASTI people
• Identify & discuss communication issues/barriers that may affect effective relationships with ATSI clients/co – workers
• Identify & describe appropriate communication strategies to support a culturally safe environment for the delivery of health services. Including the development of relationships based on a mutual respect & a tolerance of diversity
• Identify & describe the roles & responsibilities of ATSI interpreters & health workers as cultural brokers to meet duty of care requirements
Lesson 4. Reflect cultural; safety in workplace and professional relationship
• Identify and describe workplace critical issues influencing workplace and professional relationships with ATSI co – workers and clients
• Identify & describe the EN’s responsibilities in revisiting strategies to assist in the resolution of any difficulties, differences or misunderstandings
Lesson 5. Work in partnership with Aboriginal and Torress Strait Islander people and communities
• Identify and describe strategies to increase participation of ATSI people in health service delivery
• Identify and describe appropriate strategies to support ATSI people and their communities to facilitate accessibility, affordability accountability and adaptability of appropriate healthcare services and workplaces
