Course Description

To enable students to:

(i) Apply the principles of Applied Mechanics, Strength of Materials and Engineering Materials in order to determine dimensions of basic mechanical components.

(ii) Consult codes, industrial catalogues and design handbooks in order to extract information to make appropriate calculations and/or selections.

Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

EA 060 Engineering Design Concepts
EA 772 Introductory Dynamics
EA 804 Introductory Strength of Materials
EB 650 Materials for Engineering
EA 711 Mechanical Drive Components

National Competency Codes and Titles

National Element Code & Title:

EB704 Mechanical Design

Learning Outcomes

1: Apply knowledge of normal, bending and shear stresses to analyse simple mechanical components or assemblies.

2: Analyse the conditions under which simple components are to operate, determine design loading, working stresses and select appropriate materials.

3: Design simple mechanical components using industrial catalogues, standard proportions and other design aids (including nomograms) in accordance with Australian codes.

4: Select appropriate type and size of bearings for various applications.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this module will consist of the following:
1. 1 x written open book examination at the completion of the course
2. 3 x written assignments/projects provided throughout the program.
