None. Some of the skills & knowledge requirement will be covered in other competencies, such as in VBP263 Implement basic materials science principles to engineering applications; or equivalent.
This unit of competency sets out the knowledge and skills required to apply principles of strength of materials to standard engineering problems. This includes stress strain, deformation, and properties of sections, shear force and testing.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. However, practice in this unit is subject to regulations directly related to occupational health and safety and where applicable contracts of training such as apprenticeships and traineeships.

Learning activities for this course include face-to- face lectures, tutorials and sample design calculation. The basic theoretical background will be explained in the lectures and various real world engineering problems will be discussed and analysed in the lectures and tutorials.

Overview of Assessment
A person who demonstrates competency in this unit must be able to apply concepts of strength of materials to problems of strength and stability of structures and mechanical components. This includes stress, strain, deformation, properties of sections and shear force. Competency in this unit cannot be claimed until all prerequisites have been satisfied.

4. Lab - Practical.
1. Practical Lab - 10 % - Covering element no 9 and 10 of Required Skill and Knowledge. If you have competent in VBP 263 Implement basic materials science principles to Engineering applications (PROC 5230) that taught in First semester in first year, You will be given this 10% . OtherwiseTest will be conducted at another mutually agreed time.
2. Written assignment -1- 10% Covering element no 1,2, 3 and 5 of Required Skill and Knowledge
3. Unit Test -30 % (under Closed Book exam.) Covering element no 1,2, 4 and 5 of Required Skill and Knowledge
4. MAIN EXAM -50 % (under Closed Book exam.) .Covering element no 1,2, 3,4,5,6,7 and 8 of Required Skill and Knowledge
Tests are conducted under closed book conditions, formula sheets and / or extracts of reference material will be provided as appropriate. In order to pass this competency the learner must obtain a 50% of marks in combination of Unit test 1 and Main Exam. Please refer The course calender handouts for more detail. Student should clearly demonstrate how the problem solving techniques used in the test to score full marks.
Thermal stress will be covered in conjuction with VBP 283 APPLY PRINCIPLES OF MECHANICS TO ENGINEERING STRUCTURES (MIET7300)
Marks will basedon how neat, clear description and presentation of your assessment. To be successful, it is necessary to present the work in a logical and orderly manner as suggested by the following sequence of steps
a. Read the problem carefully and try to correlate the actual physical situation with the theory you have studied.
b. Draw any necessary diagrams and tabulate the problem data.
c. Establish coordinate system or moment/force diagram and apply the relevant principles and formulas, generally in mathematical form.
d. Solve the necessary equations algebraically as far as practical; then, use a consistent set of units and complete the solution numerically. Report the answer clearly with its units of measurement. Answering like “Use of Calculator arrived the result like.” will not be acceptable.
e. Study the answer using technical judgment and review the problem
