It is recommended that on entry into this unit learners possess knowledge and skills equivalent to those described in:
VPAU625 Analyse refrigeration systems
This unit of competency sets out the knowledge and skills required to analyse and evaluate heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC /R) control system requirements for a specific application.
This includes evaluation of existing automatic control systems; interpret and produce control diagrams; commission, fault find, and repair a HVAC/R control system
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication
The unit applies to manufacturing, servicing and maintenance enterprises incorporating refrigeration and air conditioning design, manufacture and installation.
This unit of competency is intended for courses at Diploma Level or higher.

1 Prepare for analysis and service task
1.1 OH&S and environmental requirements for a given work area are obtained from appropriate personnel, understood and implemented to industry standards.
1.2 The essential elements of a control system are identified.
1.3 The function of electrical, pneumatic and electronic control and flow devices using control circuit diagrams and/or specifications are determined using appropriate resources.
1.4 Sequence of control, specify settings, and adjust control devices are obtained from system’s specifications.
1.5 Appropriate personnel are consulted to ensure that work is co-ordinated effectively with others.
1.6 Equipment and resources needed for the task is obtained in accordance with enterprise procedures and checked for correct operation and safety.
2. Analyse performance of control system
2.1 Knowledge of HVAC/R system operating parameters is applied to analytical solutions to refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
2.2 Current HVAC/R energy management principles are used to evaluate the economy of operation of the system using appropriate equipment.
2.3 Control diagrams are produced according to applicable standards and practices.
2.4 Analysis is reported to appropriate personnel to establish appropriate action to be taken based on findings.
3. Adjust and service control system
3.1 Measurements, recordings, of system performance are taken as required to confirm plant control compliance with desired conditions.
3.2 System is adjusted to specification according to system’s specifications and enterprise procedures.
3.3 Components not performing to specification are isolated and replaced or repaired.
3.4 Work to test or measure on an electrically live system is carried out in strict accordance with OHS requirements and when necessary conducted within regulatory requirements.
3.5 Unplanned events are dealt with safely and effectively consistent with regulatory requirements and enterprise procedures.
4. Make recommendations to improve the performance of plant
4.1 Analysis is documented including details of all findings, calculations and assumptions.
4.2 Recommendations on control system modifications are made in discussion with appropriate personnel.
4.3 Work area is cleaned and made safe in accordance with enterprise procedures.

The learning activities in this course are designed to equip students with knowledge and skills to Analyse and Service HVAC/R Control Systems

Overview of Assessment
The assessment is conducted in both theoretical and practical aspects of the course according to the performance criteria set in the Competency Descriptor.
Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including written/oral activities and demonstration of practical skills to the relevant industry standards.
Participants are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment activities to their teacher/assessor

To successfully complete this course you will be required to demonstrate competency in each assessment task
detailed under Assessment Tasks section of Course Guide Part B.
