Course Description
This unit deals with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to practice scaling teeth, debriding root surfaces and removing deposits and stains from the hard tissues to promote optimum oral health.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit you will have developed the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to practice scaling teeth, debriding root surfaces and removing deposits and stains from the hard tissues to promote optimum oral health.

Attendance of lectures and tutorials.
Preclinical:
Participate in the following activities in a supervised environment on simulated models :
• Hand instrumentation
• Ultrasonic and Sonic Instrumentation
• Polishing Procedures
• Sharpening of instruments
Clinical:
Participate in a supervised environment on the following procedures

Case study presentations and group tutorials
Teaching Schedule
Classes will commence in Semester 2 and be delivered in 3 hour blocks. Each class will include teacher led presentations, workbook activities, group collaboration and self directed learning opportunities. This unit also includes a major component of practical application the the preclinical Laboratory.

On completion of all formative assessment, student can undertake summative assessment

Written Examination
OSCE and Practical Assessment: (ergonomics; instrumentation techniques, sharpening of instruments; preparation of surgery and patient; removing stains; performing a prophylaxis) Competency must be demonstrated.

Written Examination ( 1 x 2 hr Theory): 50% (70% pass mark
