Approach to learning and assessment

The following teaching and learning approaches form the basis of your learning experiences:

  • You will be offered an interactive teaching and learning environment. Offering a learner-centred curriculum that encourages more learner engagement and participation than traditional lecture style.
  • Laboratory work will be a major component of your learning.
  • You will be required to solve hardware and software problems.
  • You will be engaged in projects that require you to report results qualitatively, quantitatively, graphically, electronically and textually
  • Formative and summative assessments in all courses emphasise a range of written and oral skills.
  • You will be exposed to learning activities and projects that require you to work in teams and critically engage with aspects of team development and conflict resolution.
  • Learning activities focus on practical application of technical skills and an assessment program that includes the assessment of technical competence both in practice and theory.
  • You will be engaged in projects that require you to access a wide variety of knowledge repositories including professional journals, discussion lists and online sources of material.

If you have a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning and assessment methods, depending on your circumstances. You can contact the program coordinator or the Equitable Learning Services (ELS) if you would like to find out more:https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-services/equitable-learning

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): http://www.rmit.edu.au/students/enrolment/credit/he

Work integrated learning

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be in a simulated workplace environment.

In this program, you will be doing a specific course which focuses on work integrated learning (WIL). You will be assessed on professional or vocational work in a work place setting (real or simulated) and receive feedback from those involved in your industry.

You will work on equipment and software current to industry standards. Industry case studies will used where appropriate. A variety of simulated workplace experiences is embedded into the following courses:

  • COSC2446 Web Programming
  • INTE2507 Virtualisation

INTE2507 Virtualisation is a capstone course where you will apply many of the skills and techniques learned over the duration of the whole program. You will be assessed in a simulated workplace context, with feedback from an industry and/or community representative.
