Purpose of the Program

The Associate Degree in Interior Decoration & Design at RMIT will prepare you for a diverse career in Interior Decoration and Design that deals in the planning, designing and embellishment of interior space.

The program will support you to become a highly skilled practitioner with a broad range of skills and knowledge to create environmentally oriented and sustainable outcomes incorporating technologies and critical thinking that are applicable to Interior Decoration and Design.

The program will provide you with a broad theoretical and technical knowledge of residential and commercial interior fit out, including materials and their applications, colour, lighting, furnishings and decorative treatments that meet a wide range of industry standards and requirements.  You will be proficient in applying principles of aesthetics, function, environment and sustainability to design and implement a range of interior environments. You will be able to create diverse proposals that will respond to a variety of client briefs as well as having knowledge about the business aspects of decoration and design.

The program will prepare you for roles in a range of areas from large scale commercial design offices to small boutique decoration consultancies along with other specialised areas such as consulting in colour and in the retail and wholesale areas of the industry in fabric houses and material suppliers.

Upon completion of the Associate Degree you will be work ready for the interior decoration and design industry, or for further learning in Interior Design or related disciplines.

In the final year of the program you will work on a major capstone project across two courses, Decoration and Design Studio 3 (ARCH1387) and Decoration and Design Studio 4 (ARCH1389). This experience will enable you to synthesize and integrate your knowledge, as well as demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes. 

The Associate Degree Interior Decoration & Design is delivered flexibly through a mix of online facilitated teaching and face-to-face delivery at the City Campus.

Articulation and pathways

Successful completion of the following RMIT programs guarantees entry into AD020 Associate Degree in Interior Decoration and Design:

  • C4431 Certificate IV in Interior Decoration with 36 credit points of exemptions
  • C5431 Diploma of Interior Design with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study)

Further Studies:
Successful completion of this AD020 Associate Degree in Interior Decoration and Design guarantees entry into:

  • BH115 Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) with 144 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1.5 year full-time study).
    • The remaining duration in the Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) is 3 years for the February intake and 2.5 years for the July intake.
  • BP343 Bachelor of Business with up to 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study)
  • BP344 Bachelor of Business Professional Practice with up to 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study)

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.

Entrance requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school) qualification.

Prerequisites 

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 23 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL

Selection task

All applicants must complete and submit the selection task.

International English language requirement

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.0, with no band less than 5.5, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

External accreditation and industry links

In Australia there are professional bodies that recognize but do not formally accredit programs in Interior Decoration and Design.

The Program of Interior Decoration and Design at RMIT has a long history of successful engagement with the Interiors industry and has built strong and lasting relationships with industry practitioners and the professional association of the DIA (Design Institute of Australia) which is part of a globally recognised group of design organisations which include icsid, ifi, icograda, ADSDA and AdA.

As part of the learning experience for students, teaching staff are working in the Interiors industry as current decorators & designers in some capacity, and furthermore the program is validated by a IAC (Industry Advisory Committee) that consists of industry representatives from a range of design and decoration areas, regularly reviewing program content.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service. The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
