Approach to learning and assessment

Learning experience

The learning experiences that you will encounter during this program include:

  • lectures and online resources where concepts will be presented using real world examples
  • laboratory classes where you will make formulations and conduct experiments
  • tutorials where you will work on problems individually and in groups, discuss materials being learned and make presentations
  • workshops in the model pharmacy where you will participate in scenarios which simulate your future workplace(s)
  • work integrated learning where you will participate in the practice of pharmacy in community, hospital and more specialised settings under the supervision of a pharmacist
  • self-directed learning where you will study in your own time
  • team-based activities

Learning materials and tools

Learning materials will include specialised textbooks, scientific journal articles, and specific computer software and lecture/laboratory notes. Wherever possible, teaching methods to support flexible learning are employed. Below is an important list of some of the activities and associated key tools you will be using in the various courses in this program:

  • you will reflect on your work using reflective diaries
  • you will create material online using services accessible through the myRMIT system
  • lecture notes, tutorial notes/worksheets, laboratory materials and scientific journal articles
  • lecture recordings and flexible learning materials available for review online
  • online video tutorials and activities

Assessment

You will be assessed by a variety of methods. Assessments may include:

  • written assignments submitted electronically or in hard copy
  • oral presentations including OSCE assessments
  • WIL based assessments
  • formal tests and exams, including online quizzes

The method of assessment will be appropriate to course learning outcomes. The evidence of capability achievement will be demonstrated by your performance in the assessment tasks.

NOTE: As detailed in the WIL section (above), in order for you to proceed into each successive pharmacy practice course you must have received a pass grade or better for the preceding course (e.g. to proceed to Pharmacy Practice 2, you must have received a pass grade or better for Pharmacy Practice 1).

If you have a long-term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage, it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. Contact Equitable Learning Services (https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services) if you would like to find out more.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) at: www.rmit.edu.au/students/enrolment/credit/he

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience.  As a student enrolled in this RMIT Program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your skills as a professional,
  • interact with the Profession and community when undertaking these activities, and
  • complete work integrated learning activities in real and simulated practice.

In this program, you will undertake activities within many courses that contribute to work integrated learning (WIL) experience. You will be assessed on professional activities in a workplace setting (real or simulated) and receive feedback from members of the Profession.

Pharmacy is a professional degree; your skills as a pharmacy practitioner will be developed from primary knowledge, role play and placement experiences in hospital, community and other areas of the health care industry. In the final three years of the program, embedded in pharmacy practice courses (PHAR1003, PHAR1005, PHAR1006, PHAR1007), there are placement experiences in hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy and specialised practice environments. Placements become more intensive and associated assessments more sophisticated as you progress through the program. These structured experiences will help you to develop the skills that you will require in practice.

In addition to the suite of pharmacy practice courses, WIL is also embedded in the Integrated Therapeutics and Pharmacy Practice 1 (PHAR1010). In this course, you will experience the roles of the pharmacist, of other health professionals and appreciate the perspective of patients.  In total, you will experience approximately 300 hours of work-integrated learning activity over the duration of the program.

In order for you to proceed into each successive pharmacy practice course or integrated therapeutics and pharmacy practice course you must have received a pass grade or better for the preceding course; including the embedded hurdle professional competency requirements, embedded into placement activities.  Students must comply with the requirements stipulated in the School Health and Biomedical Placement Handbook to participate in placement activities.

Clinical Placement

This program includes clinical placements in regional and/or interstate locations as well as inner and outer suburban areas of Melbourne. All travel arrangements, living and accommodation expenses will be your responsibility following the allocation of you to clinical sites by the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences, Work Integrated Learning team.

Program Structure

For students who commence their study in this program from 1 January 2016 onwards, please note that some courses listed in this structure will have their course marks count toward your program's weighted average mark. Your weighted average mark will determine the honours level of your award once you have completed the program. If a course counts toward your weighted average mark, that fact will be stated in its course guide. In Enrolment Online, after you completed your course enrolment, you will be notified which of the enrolled courses will count toward the weighted average mark.

For more information about the weighted average mark, please click here
