The program is offered predominantly in a face-to-face learning environment. Courses will use a variety of learning and teaching approaches and formats including: seminars, studios, lectures and tutorials. Activities include:
- collaborative group work
- negotiated learning
- self-directed practice
- peer review
- presentations
- exercises
- workshops
- discussion
You can also expect to engage with case studies, problem-based learning and reflective techniques such as blogs and journals. Learning will be in a reflective practice framework. Online resources and activities will further support your learning.
You will learn how to constructively critique your own work and that of others. Peer learning and review are integral to the learning environment in the program, as well as for your ongoing professional practice within the creative industries.
Assessment involves ‘learning by doing’ and will include a range of activities such as:
- reports
- written reflection
- research projects
- portfolios
- presentations
- peer or industry review
Individual project proposals and presentations will be supported by research. They will relate to industry specific issues and/or theoretical constructs impacting on textile design. You will have the opportunity to work with and/or for industry practitioners on solving contemporary issues in the field.
Assessment is designed so that your lecturers and peers can provide you with formative feedback on strengths and areas for improvement. This will enable you to improve on your performance during the program, as well as continue to refine capabilities for your future engagement within the area of textile design and learning after graduation.
The Major Project in your final semester will be a capstone experience designed as a culmination of your learning throughout the program and provide a segue to your future career pathway.

This program does not include compulsory work integrated learning, as one year honours programs are focused on research. However, RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional experience. In this program you will have the option to undertake a professional engagement course GRAP2878 Fashion and Textiles Industry Placement which provides you with a deeper understanding of your potential role within the workplace. In this course you will solve authentic workplace problems or address issues faced in the fashion and textiles industry.

Program transition plan
In 2020, the program BH124 Bachelor of Textiles (Design)(Honours) will update its program structure. All new commencing students after this date will enrol into the newly amended program structure effective Semester 1, 2020.
All existing BH124 students will be transferred into the new program structure from semester 1 2020. You will be provided with a study plan and a transition map of the same or equivalent courses. Your academic progress will be considered and reviewed with an academic advisor.
Your study plan will outline:
- Courses you have already completed in BH124 Bachelor of Textiles (Design)(Honours)
- Courses you are currently enrolled in (results pending) in BH124 Bachelor of Textiles (Design)(Honours)
- Courses, if any, that you will need to complete in the amended program structure in order to graduate with the award of BH124 Bachelor of Textiles (Design)(Honours)
You will not be disadvantaged by this change of program structure, including Iif you are undertaking a reduced load, are on Leave of Absence (LOA), or have deferred studies.
You will not incur any extra costs or be required to complete extra credit points as a result of this change in program structure.
