Purpose of the Program

This program will provide you with an engaging and transformative learning experience that prepares you to understand complexities of the structure and function of the human body in health and disease. While most courses in the program are delivered on Bundoora campus, other courses are delivered wholly online or via a combination of predominantly online activities supported by some campus-based activities. The program provides hands on learning experiences and interactions with world-renowned researchers in state-of-the- art facilities. You will develop the scientific knowledge and skills to explore, analyse and discuss innovative solutions to global health challenges that will change the future of health care.

The Foundations of Health first year block will instill fundamental knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, develop your communication and professional skills, and introduce you to factors that impact the health of individuals and communities, particularly our Indigenous peoples. This common first year block gives you the skills to pursue a broad range of biomedical science careers and prepares you to transfer to other programs offered by the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences.

This program focuses on disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure. The core body of knowledge will cover the fundamentals of biomedical science with an overview of the cellular and molecular processes that are fundamental to life, and the origins and mechanisms of disease at the cellular, tissue, organ and systems level. You will gain insight into how to understand, interpret and apply research-based knowledge to the development of solutions to health and medical problems. In your final year, ONPS2716 Research Project for Medical Sciences provides you with a capstone experience, which will give you the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt in your program and enable you to engage in an immersive work placement or research experience to put theory into professional practice. The students will have an opportunity to choose a minor.

The Medical Biotechnology minor will complement the courses in the program by giving students an understanding of how the application of breakthroughs in cutting-edge fields such as genomics, tissue engineering and medical biotechnology can be used to target global health challenges.

Students with an interest in post graduate health programs can choose the Clinical Health and Disease minor to gain an in depth understanding of anatomy, nutrition and how breakthroughs in tissue engineering can restore and replace biological tissues.  

The teaching approach in this program is designed to foster your development as an independent learner so you will be able to extend your capabilities once you graduate. The teaching method includes lectorial, seminar, tutorial, practical and laboratory sessions, and the provision of online materials.

This program is designed to inspire and prepare you to become a lifelong learner. You will have the option to continue to Honours and higher degree research (Masters or PhD). You will be ready for a career in medical research, the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, health diagnostics and other settings in which systematic and critical analytical skills are required. Alternatively, you will have strong foundations for further studies in the health professions.

Articulation and pathways

Articulation

Graduates of the RMIT AD012, AD012 Associate Degree in Applied Science will be guaranteed entry into the BP231P23 Bachelor of Biomedical Science program and receive credit to a value of 108 credit points (Note: A standard year of full-time undergraduate study at RMIT University is 96 credit points)

Graduates of the RMIT AD012, AD012P24 Associate Degree in Applied Science (Biomedicine option) will be guaranteed entry into the BP231P23 Bachelor of Biomedical Science program and receive credit to a value of 120 credit points.

Graduates of the RMIT C5388 Diploma of Laboratory Technology will be guaranteed entry into the BP231P23 Bachelor of Biomedical Science program and receive credit to a value of 96 credit points (Note: A standard year of full-time undergraduate study at RMIT University is 96 credit points)

NB: While the total value of the credit offered is equivalent to 1 standard year of full-time study, the amount of time required to complete the remaining study may exceed 2 years.

Pathways refer to related programs for which you may be eligible once you have graduated from your current program.  As a successful graduate of this program, you may (upon application) be eligible to apply to various RMIT programs. Acceptance into these programs would be subject to each programs' entry requirements.

Entrance requirements

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL and units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of Biology or Chemistry and units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of: Maths: General Mathematics or Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics, or Physics, or equivalent studies.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
