The Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education) offers you a birth-12 years qualification allowing you to work in a diverse range of primary and early childhood contexts both locally and internationally. The possible career pathways include primary schools, early learning centres in schools, kindergartens, childcare centres, informal education settings, and industry and government sectors. This program prepares you for the dynamic and challenging world of education. It provides you with globally transferable skills and a qualification that can lead you to practising as a teacher and educator.
You will experience a variety of contemporary, interactive learning and teaching approaches, including both face-to-face and online learning via the blended delivery mode. You will have the opportunity to participate in a range of innovative Professional Experience practises within a variety of educational settings that meaningfully integrate theory and practise.
The Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education) is delivered primarily on campus using the blended delivery model of both face-to-face and online learning.
You will undertake a series of work integrated learning experiences in schools, early childhood, and other educational settings throughout the program. Throughout your study, you will complete a minimum of 80 days supervised placement in school environments alongside a minimum of 40 days supervised in birth to 35-month contexts and before school (3 to 5 years) settings. During these experiences, you will progressively demonstrate achievement of each descriptor of the AITSL Professional Standards for Teachers at a graduate level.
In your final year you will undertake a capstone experience in the TCHE2717 Professional Experience: Teaching Performance Assessment course. This capstone experience comprises your final teaching placement and an independent action research project into an aspect of your teaching practise. During your final teaching placement, you will demonstrate effective classroom teaching practise including planning, teaching, assessing and reflecting. In your action research project you will report on the impact your practise has on student learning. Successful completion of this Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) is a requirement for graduation.
On completion of the program, you will be a professional practitioner within the field of early childhood and primary education possessing a broad knowledge of learning, teaching, curriculum and assessment with a choice of gaining specific expertise in: English/Literacy, Mathematics/Numeracy, or STEM education. You will be eligible to apply for teacher registration and to teach in schools and early childhood settings, however you will have knowledge, skills and experience to also work in private enterprise, government agencies and community-based organisations. Through critical reflection you will work ethically and collaboratively with colleagues and external professional and community representatives.

Successful completion of RMIT's Diploma of Teacher Education Preparation guarantees entry into this program subject to completing the Casper test, with 12 credit points of exemption granted.
Upon successful completion of this program, you may be eligible to undertake further studies in post-graduate programs at RMIT University, as well as Masters by Research programs, subject to program entry requirements.
If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent with an ATAR (or equivalent) of 70, inclusive of selection rank adjustments.

Prerequisites
- Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of Maths: General Mathematics, Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics or Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics.
- A study score of at least 30 in Units 3 and 4 English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.
International English language requirement
A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 7.5 with a minimum score of 7.0 in reading and writing and 8.0 in speaking and listening.

Casper Test
All applicants must sit the Casper test. Casper is a requirement for most of the initial teacher training courses in Victoria. It is a non-cognitive online test designed to assess an applicant's personal and professional attributes. Working with children check
Please note that to undertake the Professional Experience courses across the program, you must provide a satisfactory Working With Children Check (WWCC). If you are not able to provide this, you will be unable to complete the program. For further information about obtaining a WWCC, visit http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/.
Vaccinations
Some child care centres may require you to provide evidence of vaccination prior to undertaking professional experience.
Literacy and numeracy test
The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) is a national test required by the Federal Government that all pre-service teachers must complete to be able to graduate and register as a teacher. The test is administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). You are able to sit the test up to three times before you need to seek further approval to complete a fourth or fifth (final) attempt. Please note that you are required to be physically in Australia to undertake this test at a test centre. Counselling and support for those failing the test will be available.
You are able to sit your LANTITE test before you enrol in your degree. This will provide you with the result early. If you are not successful on your first attempt, this will enable you and your lecturers to identify the areas you need to focus on in your studies. You are encouraged to complete your LANTITE test by the end of your first year of your studies.

The BP320 Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education) is accredited with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) until July 2024. Accredited programs are required to undergo reaccredition every 5 years. VIT state that if a provider has made an application for accreditation for an existing program, the approval is taken to be current until an accreditation decision has been made.
In order to teach in Victoria, graduates must be registered with VIT. Further information on the registration process and requirements can be found here.
The Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education) is accredited with Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) until August 2025. Accredited programs are required to undergo reaccreditation every 5 years. While an program is undergoing reaccreditation, the approval is taken to be current until an accreditation decision has been made.
The School of Education has many links with industry, which take on a variety of forms including schools, educational institutions, and community organisations. The program is taught by academics who have strong professional links and current experience in the education sector. In addition, we regularly engage outside educational experts as guest lecturers to ensure that you are exposed to current and emerging developments in education.
This program has an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC). Membership is diverse and drawn from external industry and professional institutions. These committees help inform program development and ensure that program content and student learning outcomes remain closely aligned with the needs of future employers. In addition, academic staff maintain connections with industry to develop and deliver work integrated learning experiences as well as offer advice on professional careers.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.
