Approach to learning and assessment

Approach to learning and assessment:

The teaching approach in this program is designed to foster your development as an independent learner so that you will be able to extend your capabilities once you graduate. Courses undertaken at the City Campus will be delivered via lectorial, seminar, tutorial, workshop, practical and laboratory sessions, site visits and the provision of online materials. You will be expected to complete all prescribed out-of-class learning activities in preparation for scheduled face-to-face and online classes, and encouraged to extend your learning through additional recommended readings and online activities. Of particular importance is the time spent in practice, laboratory based and work integrated learning activities that will develop your employability skills and capabilities.

The flight training component of the program will be conducted in conjunction with the RMIT Flight Training School. The school offers two locations to all students, Point Cook (RAAF Base) as well as Bendigo Airport (Regional). Whist participating in the flight training courses, you will also be required to attend the RMIT City Campus for academic courses.

Select courses in the program are fully online while others use a combination of online, face-to-face and  self-directed learning. All courses use Canvas for the electronic provision of course material, tutorial problems and/or other relevant documents.

Assessment

Assessment is designed to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities. Various forms of assessment will be used throughout the program. The assessment you undertake will be appropriate to the objectives and student learning outcomes for each course. Assessment may include class tests, quizzes, essays/reports, oral class presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects, practical assignments, timed assessment, and reflective journals. For the flying component of the program you will be assessed against specific criteria based on CASA recommended standards.

Inherent requirements

The following information on inherent requirements outlines the tasks you will be required to undertake during professional placement and on-campus learning activities. The non-academic abilities listed are provided for information only and are not entry requirements.

If there are any activities outlined which may be difficult for you to undertake, there are a range of adjustments to your study conditions available to enable and support you to demonstrate these abilities. Please contact the Equitable Learning Service to discuss any adjustments you may require.

Please read the full list of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Aviation) inherent requirements, which apply to the Bachelor of Aviation (Pilot Training): https://www.rmit.edu.au/study-with-us/applying-to-rmit/local-student-applications/entry-requirements/inherent-requirements/bachelor-of-applied-science-aviation

By understanding the types of activities you’ll participate in, you can:

- understand more about the program

- determine if you may need support during your studies

- make an informed decision about whether the program is suitable for you

If you are living with disability, long-term illness and/or a mental health condition, we can support you by making adjustments to activities in your program so that you can participate fully in your studies. To receive learning adjustments, you need to register with Equitable Learning Service.

The University considers the wellbeing and safety of all students, staff and the community to be a priority in on-campus learning and professional experience settings.

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing students with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience. As a student enrolled in an RMIT program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on a structured activity that allows you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking this activity
  • complete an activity in a work context or situation that may include teamwork with other students from different disciplines
  • underpin your learning with feedback from interactions and contexts distinctive to workplace experiences

Any or all of these aspects of these aspects of a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience may be in a simulated workplace learning environment.

In this program, you will be doing specific courses that focus on work integrated learning (WIL). You will be assessed on professional or vocational work in a work place setting (real or simulated) and receive feedback from those involved in your industry.

Work integrated learning has been incorporated into the following compulsory (core) courses:

  • AERO2631 Managing the Air Traffic Environment
  • AERO2431 Aviation Industry Project
  • AERO2467 Flying to Recreational Pilot Licence
  • AERO2470 Flying to Private Pilot Licence
  • AERO2586 Commercial Pilot Licence Flying

In these courses, industry practitioners are engaged in teaching or project supervision, and assessment or feedback on student performance of tasks that are indicative of work that a graduate will do as an employee in the aviation industry. In the course AERO2431 Aviation Industry Project in the final year of the program, you will conduct an independent research capstone project. This project may be undertaken either within RMIT, or within an external company in Australia or elsewhere.

If you are employed, then your final year project may be based in your workplace, solving a problem of direct relevance to your employer. In addition to the dedicated WIL courses listed above, there are other core courses that provide WIL experiences in the program, particularly through the use of industry practitioners and feedback.

You will also be assessed on professional and vocational work in the flying training environment, including in the actual aircraft (during flight and on the ground) and in-flight simulators, during which you will receive feedback from those involved in your industry.

In addition to the above work integrated learning experiences, you may choose to undertake at least 10 weeks of supervised work experience by enrolling in the optional AERO2582 Aviation Professional Experience as a University elective. Enrolling in AERO2582 means that you will be responsible for sourcing your own placement position, a task that aids development of critical career skills in identifying suitable roles and performing well in the recruitment process. The course is normally undertaken in the summer vacation period between years 2 and 3 of the program, but it can be taken at other times to align with your placement. International students please note: due to visa restrictions you are unable to enrol in AERO2582.
