Approach to learning and assessment

The traiing for a carpentry apprenticeship is set up over 4 'stages' over the duration of your 4 year apprenticeship. The stages are an alternative way to reference the years of an apprenticeship. As RMIT accepts enrolments into carpentry apprenticeships on multiple occasions over the year, the use of stages avoids confusion with references to calendar years.

During your apprenticeship, you will be released by your employer for intensive 5 day blocks of training that will be conducted at the RMIT city campus. The rest of the days during this 3 or 4 year period, you work as an apprentice with your employer to gain practical experience at the worksite. You will be scheduled attend RMIT for 6 blocks in stage 1, 6 blocks in stage 2, 6 blocks in stage 3, and 3 blocks during the fourth year.

Assessments at RMIT will closely simulate tasks which are done in the carpentry industry and most tasks need to be demonstrated to your assessor.

Please note: If you have a long-term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or the Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.

Work integrated learning

Apprentices are employed in the construction industry in full time roles with release from work for structured TAFE training. Apprentices are exposed to a variety of workplace activities that relate to their course and mentored by supervisors and other staff while onsite.

RMIT undertake teaching and assessment in a simulated environment that provide consistency in the training and assessment of all apprentices. Employers are requested to confirm the workplace competency of student as they complete campus-based study. Employers are also required to confirm overall competency of the qualification when they sign off on the training plan at the conclusion of the apprenticeship.
