Approach to learning and assessment
You will attend classes on campus for theory, practice and assessments will support knowledge and skills through completing the daily tasks of a disability support worker. It will afford you the time to practice and consolidate the skills required of a Disabilty Support Worker, you will aslo be required to attend a day a week online for student support and assessments.
Your workplace experience will be supported by an RMIT teacher who will be instrumental in guiding your learning when you are on work placement.
Theoretical knowledge will be developed through intensive face to face tutorials and online modules. You will also need to work independently, this includes: Independent study activities such as research, reading,practical and/or theoretical practice tests or assessments.
In keeping with the provisions and requirements of the Commonwealth Disability Act 2006 RMIT offers students with disabilities specific supports to undertake and complete their studies. This includes reasonable adjustments to assessment requirements so a student may have additional time to submit tasks, be able to submit the assessment task in an alternative format, be supported by a note taker, have use of specialised aids or electronic devices during classes or workshops.

Enrolled students who possess relevant prior skills, knowledge and or competencies or work-based evidence may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Recognition.
Enrolled students who possess competencies gained outside of formal learning and assessment activities may apply for Recognition of Current Competency (RCC).

All courses are assessed against the unit of competency as competency achieved or not yet competent.
Work integrated learning
RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with
professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT program you will:
- undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
- interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
- complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;
and in addition:
- these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning
- you will undertake 120 hours of work placement with an accredited Residential Aged Care facility/Home and Community
As this program is delivered at the City campus and placement in either a Residential Aged Care Facility and or with a Home and Community organisation this will enable you to
- Develop and practice your skills in a real industry context
- Undertake structured learning in consultation with RMIT teachers
- Have access to industry experts who will conduct information sessions and workshops to ensure you are abreast of contemporary industry practices.
Industry Placement Requirements
A WIL agreement including schedule and relevant insurance documentation is required to be completed before commencing work placement in week 13,14,15 and 16 of the program. In the case where a placement ends early, please refer to Changes or Cancellation of WIL Activities in the WIL Guideline.
To complete the placement component of this program, you will require:
- The NDIS workers screening check
- Immunisation requirements
- Working with Children Check
- Police check
- Flu vaccination
- a current Police Check
Additional immunisations may be required in response to changes in Government regulations or at the request of the placement host organisation.
