The Certificate IV in EAL (Further Study) is an integrated program. This means that you will study several units together on the same day and your assessments will cover more than one unit. Your program consists of classroom based teaching and Directed Study which is done outside of the classroom time.
The classroom based teaching (face-to-face teaching) is 18 hours per week (across 5 days). As well as this, you will have approximately 2.5 hours per day of Directed Study to be completed in your own time. This includes independent study activities such as research, reading and other tasks designed to develop you English skills as well as the completion of assessments. Your Directed Study will be outlined in your weekly schedule in Canvas.
The approach to learning and assessment for this program will include both supervised and non-supervised forms of training delivery.
The program provides skill development in English speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as knowledge and skills in a range of areas related to the Australian education, training and work environment.
As an RMIT student you can utilise the myRMIT Studies Learning Management System to access links to useful websites, program information and templates, readings and exercises to support your studies.
To get the most out of your studies and the services at RMIT, we include induction activities which are integrated into your language program. These will include:

- Orientation to RMIT and Libraries (library tour & on line catalogue introduction)
- Guest speakers from RUSU and campus tour
- Guest speaker from Student Services and the Study and Learning Centre
Assessment will take place throughout the program. All the units of competency require a competent grade, the following system is used:

NYC Not yet competent
DNS Did not submit for assessment.
You will be given regular assessment tasks which you will be required to submit. These will include individual and group projects completed both in and out of class. Assessment is ongoing and its purpose is to develop your skills and provides both oral and written feedback on your progress. You will be given assistance in redrafting and editing written assessment tasks because developing your ability to identify and correct your own mistakes is an important part of the learning process. It is important that you read the specific elements each assessment task addresses. At the time of undertaking assessments you will be given clear guidelines about which criteria and skills you will need to meet and demonstrate in order to successfully complete the task. Information is also available on Canvas which shows the Units and Elements covered in each assessment task.
Submission dates & deadlines will also be clearly explained.
The tasks will include:
- written essays and reports
- individual assignments, projects and oral presentations
- class participation including group and pair work.
- a portfolio with learning and pathways plan
- Excursions (compulsory attendance as they are linked to assessment tasks) Excursions may incur minor costs.
Feedback:
Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class both oral and written, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
