Approach to learning and assessment

The Certificate IV in EAL (Further Study) is an integrated program. This means that learners will study several courses (Units of Competence) clustered together.

This program will be delivered using a blended approach; face-to-face classes and online, synchronous classes. It is strongly advised that students attend most sessions in order to engage in the required learning activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to successfully complete this course.

As well as this, students will be requied to complete Directed Study activities which are done outside the class.

The classroom based blended teaching is 20 hours per week (4 hours per day; across 5 days). As well as this, learners will have approximately 9 hours of Directed Study each week made up of study activities such as research, reading and other tasks designed to develop English language skills as well as the completion of assessments. Directed Study will be outlined in the weekly schedule in Canvas (RMIT's Student Learning Managment System) and in the Course Guides.

The program provides skill development in English speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as knowledge and skills in a range of areas related to the Australian education, training and work environment.

Students of RMIT can utilise Canvas to access links to useful websites, program information and templates, readings and exercises to support their studies.

To get the most out of studying at RMIT and RMIT services, induction activities are included which are integrated into the program. These will include:

  • an Induction booklet
  • MyRMIT, Canvas, Learning Lab
  • Students Rights & Responsibilities
  • Orientation to RMIT Libraries (library tour & on line catalogue introduction)
  • Guest speakers from RUSU and campus tour
  • Guest speakers from Student Services and the Study and Learning Centre

Assessment will take place throughout the program. All the units of competency require a competent grade. The following  grading system is used:

  • CA Competency achieved
  • NYC Not yet competent
  • DNS Did not submit for assessment.

All assessment tasks must be submitted and assessments will include individual and group projects completed both in and out of class. Feedback on the assessment tasks will be provided both orally and in written format. Learners will be given assistance in redrafting and editing assessment tasks because developing the ability to identify and correct own mistakes is an important part of the learning process. It is important that learners read the specific elements each assessment task addresses. Information is also available on Canvas (the student learning management system) which shows the Units and Elements covered in each assessment task and also in the Course Guide.

Submission dates and deadlines will also be clearly explained and appear on Canvas and in the Course Guides.

The tasks may include:

  • written essays and reports
  • individual assignments, projects and oral presentations
  • class participation including group and pair work
  • a portfolio with learning and pathways plan
  • excursions (compulsory attendance as they are linked to assessment tasks). Some excursions may incur minor costs.

As well as feedback on assessments, feedback will also be provided on progress throughout the semester through individual and group feedback.

If a learner has a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment method. The Equitable Learning Service Unit (https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services) can assist learners with this.
