Top of pagePurpose of the Program
The objectives of this program are to provide an opportunity for you to gain specialised knowledge and skills, including the ability to generate ideas for design and execute a range of screen printed, machine knitted or woven fabrics for a variety of applications and to technical specifications. Throughout the program practical instruction is provided to allow you to explore design projects and problem solving exercises related to industry practises.
This is achieved through a practical, hands on, studio based program where you will have access to state of the art facilities to undertake projects briefs. Student will have the opportunity to develop your colour, drawing, design and computer skills to plan, develop and produce textiles and products.
The Certificate IV in Textile Design, Development and Production covers occupations such as those in assistant design and sample production roles within the textiles industry. Graduates at the Certificate IV level will be capable of working as assistants or trainee designers, working in a supervised environment in disciplines such as screen print, weave, knitting and surface design. Textile designers as part of a design team for small and large companies.

Successful completion of this program guarantees entry into Associate Degree in Fashion Design and Technology with 12 credit points of exemptions.
Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Textile Design, Development and Production guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Textiles (Design) with no credit points.
If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.

There are no minimum academic requirements.
Domestic applicants: You can apply through VTAC or as an RMIT direct applicant.
For domestic students only: You are required to submit a personal statement outlining:
- your reasons for wanting to study this program
- your intended career path
- your personal strengths and attributes relevant to the program
- details of any related work or voluntary experience
For international students: You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 50%. Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post-secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.

In Australia there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit programs in Textile Design, Development or Production.
This qualification has been developed in conjunction with Manufacturing Skills Australia (MSA).
At RMIT the program is supported by a Program Advisory Committee, membership includes representatives from a range of textile design, production and related industries and both small and large enterrpises. The Program Advisory Committee advises on current industry practice.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Computing facilities are available to you in the Computer Labs in Building 512. Specialised Weaving and Knit programs are used in classes, these programs are available to you in the department studios as well as the CAD labs.
Specialised 'state-of-the-art' Screen Printing, Weaving and Knitting studios are used for classes.
