Purpose of the Program

This nationally recognised qualification reflects the role of workers who provide an advanced level of assistance to dental practitioners which contributes to the quality of oral health care. Dental radiography work must only be performed by a person with a radiation user licence granted by the relevant State/Territory regulatory authority under legislation. The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Articulation and pathways

This Program has many courses in common with the Certificate IV in Dental Assisting, allowing graduates to receive significant credit if they successfully apply for entry to the C4418 Certificate IV in Dental Assisting.

Entrance requirements

Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who have achieved: 

  • HLT31812 Certificate III in Dental Assisting or 
  • HLT35015 Certificate III in Dental Assisting or 
  • HLT35021 Certificate III in Dental Assisting or
  • equivalent

and be currently employed as a Dental Assistant.

Professional Compliance

Working with Children Check*

Applicants will be required to hold a valid Victorian Working with Children (WWC) Check (valid for 5 years) prior to undertaking professional placement as part of this program. 
Note: For placements undertaken interstate a valid WWC Check is required for that state.

National Police Record Check*

Applicants will be required to hold a valid National Police Record Check with no disclosable outcomes for professional placements as part of this program. 

Immunisation and vaccination requirements*
Covid-19 Vaccination: annual requirement

All students are required to be tested for infection with blood borne viruses (hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV) no more than 12 months prior to course commencement. Students and practitioners performing exposure-prone procedures, such as dental and oral health students, are required to repeat this testing every three years due to an increased risk of infection transmission. 

*All relevant screening and compliance check fees are the responsibility of the student.

External accreditation and industry links

The Certificate IV in Dental Assisting (Dental Radiography) is a nationally endorsed qualification. On-site training for this program is based at the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne through a long standing partnership with Dental Health Services Victoria where you are able to interact with other Dental professionals for example Oral Health students, Dental Technicians and Dental Prosthetists. RMIT University through its Industry Advisory Committee, consults with industry directly. RMIT has been at the forefront of Dental Assisting training and education for over 20 years and has built up an extensive network of industry links. Industry Advisory Committee members represent both Public Health and a range of private practices, both regional and metropolitan.

Specific licensing requirements apply to the use of radiation apparatus in dental practice. A candidate must have completed an approved program of study,such as this Certificate IV qualification to apply for and be granted a radiation licence. 

Application for the radiation licence is through the relevant State or Territory Authority.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
