Approach to learning and assessment

As an apprentice, you will attend the workplace for 3 or 4 years depending on the number of units you need to complete and if you recieve any reognition for any previous study, such as an electrical appreticeship.  During this period of time, you will be released by your employer to the attend RMIT city campus for regular training . During the balance of your appreticeship you revieve supervision and mentoring from your employer and senior staff to gain practical experience and develop your skills on the worksite.

Assessments at RMIT will closely simulate tasks which are done in the industry and assessment tasks need to be observed by your assessor. Practical assessment tasks are undertaken in the simulation labs that reflect industry technology.

If you have a long term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage, it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program manager for plumbing, or the RMIT Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience. As an apprentice enrolled in this RMIT University program, you will be assessed by a qualified assessor on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate vocational competency which closely simulate workplace scenarios in the plumbing sector.

You will be learning while at work as an apprentice. Feedback from work supervisors and others in the workplace can also be used to assist the assessor in determining your competency.
