Approach to learning and assessment
To be awarded the Certificate IV of Youth Work you will need to complete eighteen (17) units of competency.
- Fifteen (15) units of competency are core requirements of the national qualification.
- Two (2) units have been selected as electives by the RMIT Vocational Education Youth Work Team because of their relevance to the Youth Work sector.
Learning and assessment will use a range of methods including:
- classes are delivered on Campus (City) that are designed to provide maximum class interaction, discussion and
- development of ideas and skills
- specialist guest speakers to provide insights into current workplace practices
- extensive online resources and support of both the content areas and the study skills to support
- learning
- both group and individual opportunities for learning and assessment
- support for students to develop language, literacy and numeracy skills required to succeed in the
- program
- assessment that are designed to prepare you for work-ready performance and/or further study
The program will enable you to gain skills and knowledge that are directly applicable to workplace practices. Peer learning and networking will be fostered throughout the program through the use of an online learning system. Discussions and group work with other students will be a key part of your learning. The program also incorporates project based learning (both group and individual work).
Assessment occurs in each unit of competency in the program and incorporates a range of methods to assess performance and the application of the required knowledge and skills. Assessment tasks will include:
- action learning projects,
- individual and group presentations
- demonstration of practical skills in a range of formats including simulations and workplace activities
- case-studies
- written reflections
The approach to learning and assessment for this program will include both supervised and non-supervised forms of training delivery.
Supervised training is teacher directed learning and assessment activities. These include:
- face-to-face learning e.g. workshops and scheduled classes
- online learning activities
- assessment tasks
You will also need to work independently, and this will include:
- independent study activities such as research, reading, practical and/or theoretical practice tests or assessments

Program transition plan
The CHC40413 Certificate IV in Youth Work will be replaced by CHC40421 Certificate IV in Youth Work. This is the result of national changes to this qualification, which include changes to some of the courses in the program.
If you complete all the requirements of your current CHC40413 Certificate IV in Youth Work, you will be eligible to graduate with the CHC40413 Certificate IV in Youth Work qualification.
If you are unable to complete this program in the required timeframe, we will support you to transfer to the new CHC40421 Certificate IV in Youth Work
