Approach to learning and assessment
The staff-to-student ratio in the Diploma of Laboratory Technology provide you with opportunities for individual instruction. Teachers have extensive industry experience and expertise and maintain close links with colleagues in the industry.
- Face to face teaching: to develop knowledge of underpinning concepts
- Personal study: using text books, journal articles and online resources to reinforce and broaden your understanding of these subjects
- Laboratory sessions: will allow you to develop skills in practical applications of all aspects of laboratory work related to this program. These are all held in modern, well-equipped laboratories with industry standard equipment and Standard Operating Procedures
- Industry Visits: such visits may be organised to further enhance application of knowledge in the field and allow students to observe large scale production facilities and laboratories
- Computer Laboratory sessions: The computer laboratory work will allow you to develop skills in the application of the concepts learnt during class room teaching of data analysis
- Personal research: to become familiar with recent developments and discoveries in this area
- Group work & peer teaching: to broaden your understanding of a range of subject areas
- Online Learning: All courses will make use of Canvas, the online learning management system at RMIT. Here you will be able to access course notes and materials as well as additional reference material, quizzes and self assessments. In some courses, there will be online discussion forums moderated by the teacher.
There will be a range of different activities. These will be designed to assess both your underpinning knowledge of the courses you are studying and just as importantly, your development of laboratory skills. You will have ample opportunity to practise your laboratory skills and receive ongoing feedback from your teachers. Assessment will include exams, tests, laboratory reports, research projects and assignments, oral presentation and demonstration of practical skills. Your course guide for every course will give further details of what is required in each case. It will be your responsibility to read this information carefully and meet all the required deadlines.

Work integrated learning
RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate vocational competency.
In all your courses (subjects) you will spend a significant proportion of your time in an industry standard laboratory acquiring real workplace skills. You will have the opportunity to become skilled in using a wide range of laboratory instruments and techniques. You will have ample opportunity to practice and reinforce your basic workplace skills and to then build on these in later courses.You will also be assessed in this workplace environment to ensure that you are able to perform the necessary tasks to industry standard.
As part of your studies, you will undertake 10 days of work placement in a relevant laboratory environment. RMIT staff will help you find a placement. This placement provides you with the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the industry and to further develop laboratory skills in an area that also requires:
- team work
- attention to quality control
- working to timelines
You may be placed in a variety of work environments, ranging from small private pathology laboratories, large hospital laboratories and research institutes.
Prior to commencing the placement, you will do a range of classroom activities investigating workplace structures and roles in preparation for your time there.
If you are working in a job which is related to your studies you will also be learning while at work and may have the opportunity to be assessed in your workplace for some or all of your courses. Feedback from work supervisors and others in the workplace can be used as evidence of competency, and an RMIT University assessor can visit your workplace to observe your work practice.Top of page

Program transition plan
To ensure training packages are responsive to industry priorities for new and updated skills, they are monitored and reviewed during their endorsement period. Sometimes the outcome of a review is that a qualification is superseded by a new version of the qualification, or a new qualification altogether. The school will endeavour to the best of their abilities to ensure that students are not disadvantaged in this process.
All units of competency (courses) from the previous qualification MSL 50116 have been deemed as equivalent.
