Purpose of the Program

In the Diploma of Fashion Styling you will explore fashion styling and its relation to fashion design, fashion photography, personal styling and fashion editorial industries. You will develop the skills and knowledge to become a fashion stylist. The program is designed to train you to become multi-skilled in a wide range of fashion and fashion styling related areas that will enable you to work in a variety of different types of jobs in the fashion and styling industry in Australia and overseas.

During the program you will also be encouraged to participate in industry styling events and fashion styling opportunities. You will engage with industry experts in fashion styling, design, retailers and fashion magazine editors within class or through excursion activities such as at trade and fashion shows,

You will participate in practical workshops in the development of fashion editorial and fashion catalogues, create blog sites and other social media sites, work on fashion styling shoots for film or TV, work in the photographic studio creating fashion images for fashion brands and undertake a number of fashion events including a fashion parade within a fashion industry context.

The Diploma of Fashion Styling is both an entry level qualification in fashion styling and related skills as well as a qualification providing the skills for employment in a wide range of jobs in the fashion and fashion styling industry.

Graduates who successfully complete the Diploma of Fashion Styling could work in fields including: fashion and branding, film and television, social media, publishing and advertising. Examples include working as a personal stylist or image consultant, editorial, catalogue or commercial fashion stylist, wardrobe stylist for film or TV, fashion show and event stylist, fashion and style blogger, social media fashion stylist, fashion retail stylist, creative specialist or a fashion brand stylist.

Articulation and pathways

Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Design guarantees entry into this program. 

Successful completion of this program guarantees entry into the Associate Degree in Fashion Design and Technology and the Associate Degree in Fashion and Textiles Merchandising.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.

Entrance requirements

There are no minimum academic requirements. 

Domestic applicants are expected to demonstrate an aptitude for fashion styling and/or design through presentation of a folio and be prepared to undertake an appropriate work placement to complete the qualification. Successful applicants will be supported to source the work placement to successfully complete the qualification. 

International students must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school qualification);

AND

Complete English language requirement

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 5.5, with no band less than 5.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

External accreditation and industry links

In Australia there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit programs in the fashion styling industry.

At RMIT this program is supported by an Industry Advisory Committee that consists of high profile representatives from the fashion design and fashion styling  industry, and advises on training, delivery and assessment. Part of the Committee's brief is to ensure that the School's link with industry standards and practice remain current.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
