Approach to learning and assessment

Successful completion of this program requires you to demonstrate competency in 16 units of competency.

The learning and teaching experience in the Sound Production program was developed in consultation with industry operators. The “learning tools” used in our program are designed to offer the most effective and realistic industry relevant environment possible, ensuring that you have the skills required throughout the industry. In this instance, the “learning tools” are purpose built Sound Production studios, built through ongoing consultation with industry to ensure relevance to industry practice. Studios include a comprehensive range of current model microphones, outboard processing units and split level analog & digital hybrid mixing consoles, housed in recording studios.

Learning and teaching is conducted in the following types of environments:

CLASS

Classroom delivery, often augmented by audio / visual presentations. These classes will concentrate on arming you with essential core audio theory and information before embarking on practical projects.

AUDIO LAB

Practical classes in computer labs containing audio workstations each consisting of an industry standard Apple / Macintosh computer, with current audio software and sound hardware including an audio interface and midi keyboard.

STUDIO

Practical sessions are conducted in our three recording studios. Studios 1 & 3 are full scale professional recording facility, with full Pro Tools HD rigs, a range of outboard processing equipment, a full complement of professional microphones and acoustically designed recording and control rooms, with the central hub being (A) a Neve Genesys mixing console for studio 1 and (B) an SSL mixing console for studio 3. Studio 2 is a mixing facility, also utilising full Pro-Tools HD hardware and Digidesign mixing console allowing mixing in stereo or 5.1 surround. Studio 2 is a smaller recording facility, with Pro Tools hardware & software, augmented by a Toft analog mixing console.

Undertake Live Audio Operations - this unit engages you in the process of undertaking live sound production for commercial bands at a commercial music venue, allowing students a real world work integrated learning opportunity. This will include system installation, front of house sound, monitor sound mixing, and system decommissioning. The venue will either be at RMIT or away from RMIT and is preceeded by practical sessions in studios at RMIT.

Your learning will be supported by on-line resources via MyRMIT.

Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and may include folios, reports, oral class presentations, group and individual projects, lab projects and practical assignments.

The assessment tasks and the form of assessment will be identified in your course guides. To access each course guide go to the Program Structure section of this Program Guide, select which course you would like to look at and then select which term you would like to view.

You will also benefit from ongoing teacher feedback, class workshopping, class and group discussion, self assessment and reflection, and peer review.

Where appropriate, you are also given the opportunity to present work to, and receive critique from, industry professionals, either through workplace assessment or within class-based discussion or presentation sessions to industry figures.
